Cable 7 Public Access Television, also known as; LCL Leicester Cable 7, Diamond Cable 7. ntl: Cable 7 [1]

Background[edit]

Transmitted originally via the LCL/Diamond/ntl: cable network in Leicester from 1992 to 2000. Cable 7 was the Local Television Community Channel of Leicester.

Programmes ran for eight years, broadcasting eight hours of new local programs each week, covering all aspects of life in Leicester from Football to Fashion shows and featured the whole community from school children to senior citizens.

Training evenings would be held where the public could come and learn how to use AV equipment and make their own programs. Before embarking on a program idea volunteers would come along and discuss their program proposal with the Channel manager, who would explain copyright laws and other relevant material.

Working closely with a whole host of local organizations including the city and county councils, the RSPCA, the Police, local schools and colleges, Football, Basketball and American Football Organizations and Disabled groups.

The aim of cable 7 was to offer the local community a truly interactive television channel, one that can be enjoyed by its local viewers and more importantly one that they can actively become part of.

Cable 7 worked very closely with Fosse Community Studios in Leicester, and each month the studios were available to cable 7 volunteers to use for their projects. This was the cable users club and again was free of charge.

In its time, the most prolific local channel in Britain and with its 150 plus volunteers could boast to be the most interactive of all local channels in Britain.
