Candy-coated Pill is the third studio extended play (EP) by American singer-songwriter and record producer Marian Renta released March 25, 2022 and is Renta's follow-up release to Great Deep (2021).[1] The EP's lead single "Shot in the Dark" was released February 2, 2022 and was accompanied by the song's music video that premiered on Youtube the same day.[2] Broader in sound than her previous EP, Candy-coated Pill is a fusion of alternative pop and soul, and contains wider use of drum accompaniment compared to Renta's previous work.[1] The EP was released worldwide to digital stores, in addition to Soundcloud and Bandcamp, and was accompanied by the premiere of the music video for the EP's title-track.

Composition and recording[edit]
The lyrical content of Candy-coated Pill intricately explores the subjects of lovesickness, fear of commitment, and spirituality. The EP also touches on closure and letting go. All of the songs were composed by Renta at her piano, and feature Renta on piano throughout the album. The EP consists of five songs varying in tempo and style, ranging from alternative rock and pop to dark R&B. Recording and mastering occurred in Renta's home recording studio from January 2022 to March 2022, and all of the vocals were recorded using an Aston Spirit condenser microphone. Renta's vocal arrangements in Candy-coated Pill are more elaborate than her previous work and contain a broader use of layering and background vocals as well as a more soulful delivery. They are performed in a mezzo-soprano tessitura, and are expressed through melisma predominantly in the chest voice.
