"Shot in the Dark" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter and record producer Marian Renta released digitally as a single on February 2, 2022.[1] The song served as the lead single for Renta's third studio EP Candy-coated Pill. "Shot in the Dark" was accompanied by a music video that premiered via Youtube the same day as the single's release, and is a fusion of midtempo dark-pop and soul.[2]

Composition and recording[edit]
"Shot in the Dark" was written and arranged by Renta in January of 2022. The lyrics speak of two partners who pursue a romantic interest with each other despite being incompatible. The underlying arrangements possess a dark and ambient backdrop with an intermittent drum beat that drives the song in the song's chorus. "Shot in the Dark" uses a simple verse-chorus form for its structure, and it contains deep synths that set the song's dark mood. The song's sound is said by Renta to be 'a dark, energetic, soul midtempo track with EDM underpinnings'.[3]
Recording for "Shot in the Dark" began January 5, 2022, and concluded January 15, 2022. All of the vocals were recorded using an Aston Spirit condenser microphone, and the vocal arrangements are simplistic with occasional use of layering and background vocals. They are performed in a mezzo-soprano tessitura, and are expressed through melisma in the chest and head voice ranges. Mastering took place in Renta's home recording studio from January 15-17.
"Shot in the Dark" was made available for pre-order on Spotify on January 18, 2022, and promotion for the single launched immediately and was implemented with a trailer for the music video and social media posts.[3] The single's cover art is derived from a still frame taken from the song's music video and features a closeup shot of Renta's partially exposed face.

The "Shot in the Dark" music video was directed by Renta, and it was filmed in Chatham in upstate New York on January 15, 2022. The video premiered on Youtube on February 2, 2022 at 2:00PM (EST)[2]. The video was shot in black-and-white, and it features Renta miming the song's lyrics while sitting in a wooden chair inside an abandoned farmhouse.
