Candice "Candy" Maaka (born April 20, 1983) is a New Zealand-born writer, author, fashion designer, social entrepreneur, conservationist, humanitarian and animal advocate.

Maaka began her career in I.T and left the tech-space to pursue design and writing. She launched her fashion label in 2009, and won the QANTAS Spirit of Youth People's Choice Award in November 2012. The following year, she was named a finalist in the QANTAS Spirit of Youth Judge's Choice Award[1] (November 2013).

Having a strong love for animals and the Earth, the long-term-vegetarian-turned-vegan rebranded her fashion label[2] to follow her beliefs;[3] she left high-end fashion and changed direction into social philanthropy.

In 2017, Maaka was named an Ambassador for W.I.R.E.S Wildlife Rescue, in which she works directly with the organization to raise funds and awareness for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

Maaka is set to release her debut SFF novel in 2018.

Early & Personal Life[edit]

Maaka was born in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, and was raised on a small, country farm which is where she developed a close connection to animals. At the age of 12, she turned vegetarian.

Maaka studied fashion design in Sydney, Australia, and launched her label[4] in 2009. In 2012, she won the QANTAS Spirit of Youth People's Choice Award, for fashion. And in 2013, she was named a finalist in the QANTAS Spirit of Youth Judge's Choice Award, for fashion - which was judged by Australian fashion house, Zimmerman.

After an internal conflict with her leather footwear label[5] and animal cruelty, in 2014, Maaka rebranded[6][7][8] and moved away from using materials that harm animals and the environment.

Maaka has a strong interest in earth sciences and studied Marine Science, Marine Conservation and Shark Biology, and is currently earning her diploma in Master Herbalism.

She currently resides in Sydney, Australia.
