Caraluzzi's is an American regional chain of grocery stores headquartered in Bethel, Connecticut. The chain currently operates 9 locations in the Greater Danbury area.[1] The company was voted 4th favorite regional grocer in Connecticut in 2022.[2]

History[edit]

In 1949, Anthony Caraluzzi, Sr.[3], who previously worked 27 years for the Gristede's Supermarkets in The Bronx, purchased the former Bethel Fruit & Vegetable Market on Greenwood Avenue in Bethel, Connecticut. Together with his oldest son, the market was converted into a modern grocery store. Until 1960, all his sons came into the family business. In 1952, Caraluzzi purchased Redding Ridge Market and in 1959 it moved to 98 Greenwood Avenue where the headquarters are still located today.[citation needed]

In 1973, the store expanded to 14,000 square feet and included an attached bank with in-store teller service. In 1989, the store expanded again and more than doubled its current size to 31,000 square feet, there were a new store owned bakery and offering now included prepared foods. In the 1990s, the third generation became active in business.[citation needed]

In 1997, Nutmeg Discount Liquors was integrated in the grocery chain. This brand has ever since been rebranded as Caraluzzi's Wine and Spirits. Since the 2000s, the group has grown to now 9 stores (grocery and liquors).[4]
