Carl Friedrich Dahl (1849–1902)[1][2] was a German inventor and industrial chemist best known for developing the kraft pulping process, the dominant chemical method used worldwide for producing strong wood pulp for papermaking.[3]
His invention, patented in 1884, revolutionized the pulp and paper industry and laid the foundation for modern industrial papermaking.[4][5][6]
Early life and education
He worked primarily in the field of industrial chemistry and papermaking technology during the late 19th century. Dahl conducted his research work mainly in Danzig (then part of Prussia, now Gdańsk, Poland), where he focused on improving chemical pulping methods.
Invention of the kraft process
In 1879, Dahl developed an improved chemical pulping method by modifying the existing soda pulping process. By introducing sodium sulfate into the chemical recovery cycle, he produced a cooking liquor containing sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide.
This mixture proved more effective in dissolving lignin, the natural polymer binding wood fibers together.[7][8] The resulting pulp exhibited superior strength compared to earlier pulps, leading Dahl to name the method the kraft process —from the German word Kraft, meaning "strength". The process was patented in Germany in 1884 and soon attracted international attention.
The first industrial-scale kraft pulp mill began operation in Sweden in 1890, marking the start of rapid global adoption of the technology.
Legacy
Dahl’s invention transformed the paper industry by enabling the economical production of strong pulp from wood, replacing earlier dependence on rags and less efficient chemical methods. The kraft process soon became the dominant pulping method, particularly after the development of chemical recovery systems in the early 20th century, which made kraft mills both economically viable and environmentally more sustainable.[9]
Today the kraft process accounts for over 80% of global chemical pulp production and remains the standard method for manufacturing packaging materials, corrugated board, and many paper products. Dahl is regarded as one of the most influential innovators in the history of papermaking technology.[10]
