Casey Mongillo is an American actor and voice actor who has voiced in several English language dubs of anime, animation, web series, and video games. As a non-binary actor, Mongillo has been recognized for their portrayal of lead character Shinji Ikari in the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion in 2019, as well as Shou Suzuki in season 2 of the Mob Psycho 100 anime which is being broadcast on Adult Swim / Toonami.
Biography[edit]
In 2019, Mongillo voiced the main character Shinji Ikari in the Netflix dub of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, replacing Sean Spencer, who played the part in the original ADV Films English dub.[2][3] Mongillo tweeted that playing Shinji was "one of the greatest honors of my life".[4]
Noel Kirkpatrick of TV Guide praised Mongillo's portrayal, saying Mongillo excelled at switching "between sarcasm and sadness, delight and detachment", and that they did "a better job of capturing Shinji’s pre-teen voice" than Spencer.[3] Lauren Orsini, a contributor to Forbes.com, wrote that "I’m particularly enamored with Casey Mongillo’s portrait of Shinji. A nonbinary actor, their youthful, gender-neutral voice fits well with this anxious, traumatized teen who is just coming of age."[5] Aja Romano of Vox wrote that while "the new Netflix translation waters down the homoerotic nature of one of the series’ significant relationships", that "Netflix had cast a nonbinary actor, Casey Mongillo, in the lead role of Shinji, but this laudable move had virtually gone unnoticed amid the more widespread outcry over the other changes that had been made."[6] Carol Grant, in an opinion piece for Vice magazine, argued that Shinji being played by a trans actor made the series feel more queer, saying that "Mongillo's delivery captures the delicate interplay between the masculine and feminine aspects of Shinji's voice and personality, bringing his bodily and gendered anxieties to life".[7]
Mongillo, who is non-binary,[8] disclosed in a 2015 interview that they experienced transphobia in the voice acting industry and were denied work when they started taking hormone replacement therapy. However, they said they've always had a good relationship with Rockstar Games, and said "I don’t believe that they are transphobic or anti-LGBT by any means. Rockstar is awesome."[9]
Mongillo released a single, "Everything Is Alright", on Apple Music on April 3, 2012.[10]
