The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was enacted by the Government of India on 12 December 2019, a move which sparked widespread protests against the act and the associated proposal of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protests first began in Assam and spread swiftly to other states. This article contains only a partial list of casualties in the Citizenship Amendment Act protests, those caused by the police[3][4]

Estimates[edit]

There is no single official figure for the overall number of peoples killed in the protest since 4 December 2019, but estimates for specific years or periods have been published by a number of independent organizations and are presented here.

Most, if not all, of the sources state that their estimates are likely to be underestimates.

Deaths[edit]

As of 4 January 21 people were killed by police firing guns during the CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh,[5][6][7] 3 killed in Karnataka[7] and 5 in Assam. All the three states were ruled by BJP. Overall, 27 people were killed by police firing guns in the whole of India.[8][9] With 19 killed and 1,246 people arrested based on 372 FIRs lodged in the state, UP was the worst affected state with the biggest police crackdown in India.
