Catchgod is an online Chinese language dating website. It is also known as "开搞网" in Chinese, which comes from catchgod's homophonic. The server is located in Sydney, Australia. Visitors can register as members and post their personal details to socialize. The main users of Catchgod are Chinese people living in Australia.
History
The website had 20,000 members as of March 2011.[1] A technical problem crashed the server in June 2012, which resulted in the loss of many members' data.[2] As of May 2012, Catchgod used a stricter registration system to filter members and avoid data theft.[3]
Beau Donnelly, an investigative journalist from Port Phillip Review Local, reported that some illegal prostitution businesses posted their advertisements on catchgod.[4][5] At the same time, main Chinese online communities such as 6park.com,[6] oursteps.com.au[7] and yeeyi.com[8] reported this news and discussed why this scandal happened.
