Cathaysianism
Cathaysianism (simplified Chinese: 诸夏主义; traditional Chinese: 諸夏主義; pinyin: Zhū Xià zhǔyì) is a radical separatist ideology founded by Chinese dissident Liu Zhongjing. Cathaysianists argue that the concepts of Zhonghua minzu and Han Chinese were fabricated by the Chinese nationalists (especially the Chinese Communist Party), and they contend that China should be divided into multiple nations and countries.
Overview
Cathaysianists, including Liu, define modern China as an 'empire' and advocate dismantling it and dividing it into multiple states to democratize China; this perspective holds that China should be fragmented into several states, as during the Spring and Autumn / Warring States period, and that a unified China was artificially created.[1]
Cathaysianists do not view the language of Hokkien, Yue, and Shanghainese as Chinese languages. Liu reject Zhonghua minzu (中華民族, lit. 'Chinese people' or 'Chinese nation') as a political fabrication and deny Han minzu (漢民族, lit. 'Han people' or 'ethnic Han') as well; thus Cathaysianists regard people of Yue, Shanghainese, Minyue, Dian, Yelang, Manchu, Jin, Basurian, etc, as distinct minzu (lit. 'nation', 'people' or 'ethnic group') and do not see them as ethnic Chinese people.[2]
Liu believes that China will collapse in the future for a variety of reasons, including political, economic and geopolitical, which will lead to a state of disorder that he would refer to as "The Great Flood" (大洪水). China will soon experience massive chaos akin to the disintegration processes of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. Economic crises and financial collapses will trigger monetary collapse. Following the collapse of the central government, displaced populations will emerge frequently. The Cathaysian nation-states was established in the aftermath of this period. The Great Flood refers to the process of dynastic collapse triggered by popular uprisings. "The Great Flood" refers to the process of dynastic collapse triggered by popular uprisings; historical example is "The Great Flood" of the Ming Dynasty, which lacked the capacity to reconstruct systems comparable to those of the Tang or Song dynasties. He further analyzes that Europe avoided such a "The Great Flood" due to its feudal system, where power was decentralized among local autonomous entities, preventing total order collapse during dynastic transitions.[3]
Cathaysianists are sympathetic to the Hong Kong and Taiwan independence movement, but these Hong Kong and Taiwan independence movement have a longer history than Cathaysianism, a fact that Liu also acknowledges.[4] Liu argued that Hong Kong could not gain safety before Cantonese independence, and that it would inevitably maintain close ties with the Cathaysian countries. However, he said it was appropriate for Taiwan to cut off contact and maintain distance with the Cathaysian countries.[5]
Activism
He Anquan, who founded the Shanghai National Party, advocates for Shanghai's independence, identities as a Shanghai nationalist.[6]
In November 2018, Liu issued the Declaration of Independence of the 'Republic of Basuria' (大蜀民國), proclaiming himself "Provisional President of the Republic of Basuria."[7]
