Free Bali Movement
The Free Bali Movement (GBM, short for Gerakan Bali Merdeka) is a separatist movement that threatens for Bali to secede from Indonesia. Calls for Bali's independence have existed since the era of President Soeharto (the New Order).[1] This call resurfaced with the Free Bali Movement after the 2012 South Lampung riot and the desire for special autonomy in Bali.[2] Although the movement is not as popular or active as the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), the Free Papua Movement (OPM), etc., it is often exaggerated on social media.

History

The issue of Bali's independence began to surface during the New Order era under the government of President Soeharto.[1] However, this discourse resurfaced in 2012, following a conflict between residents in Balinuraga, South Lampung, involving Balinese transmigrants and local residents.[1][2] The incident triggered a sense of injustice and disappointment among the Balinese community, who felt they were not adequately protected by the central government. Furthermore, in 2006, a number of Balinese figures reportedly threatened to secede from Indonesia if the Anti-Pornography Bill was passed.[3]
