The Honourable Justice Catherine Gail Button is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, appointed on 16 January 2023 to the Melbourne registry.[1][2] She previously served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria from 27 July 2021 to 15 January 2023.[3][4]
Education and early career
Button graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws in 1997.[1] As a Rhodes Scholar she studied at the University of Oxford, completing the Bachelor of Civil Law (2000), Master of Philosophy in Law (2001) and Doctor of Philosophy (2003).[1] She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 2000, worked as a senior associate at MinterEllison, and spent time at the Law Commission of England and Wales.[1]
Practice and judicial appointments
Button joined the Victorian Bar in 2007 and took silk in 2018.[1][5] She was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 27 July 2021,[4] and a judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 16 January 2023.[2][3] The Australian Government Directory records her commission commencing 16 January 2023.[6] The Victorian Bar noted her Federal Court appointment.[7]
