The Center for Regional Economic Development (CRED) is an interdisciplinary centre at the University of Bern focused on the development of economic areas. Its focus is on applied questions in the areas of Location dynamics and regional economic policy, Tourism as well as Land use policy and real estate doing so with state methodologies at a high scientific standard.[4]

It is run jointly by the Institutes of Economics, Geography as well as Management and Entrepreneurship of the University of Bern. The CRED consists of four research units: Economics, Entrepreneurship, Geography and Tourism. Within the Swiss universities, the CRED is the only institution which combines the perspectives of economics, economic geography, management and tourism while focusing specifically on the spatial dimension of economic development.[5]

The institute was founded in February 2012, first as an interfaculty competence center of the University of Bern. The CRED is now one of the strategic "Centres of Excellence" within the University of Bern,[6] as a centre of excellence its purpose is to be a scientific partner for regional, cantonal, national and international public and private institutions.

Teaching[edit]

The specialized Master's in Applied Economic Analysis (MAEA) is awarded by the University of Bern,[7] and is regulated under Swiss law governing higher education.[8] The Master's in Applied Economic Analysis (MAEA) at the University of Bern is the first university-level program in Switzerland that is specifically aimed at teaching the skills to enable future practitioners to combine economic theory with knowledge of the relevant data as well as the adequate empirical methods to relate policy recommendations.[9] It provides a unique combination of state-of-the-art theoretical and methodological courses and regular applications to real-world cases. The MAEA is nested at an internationally renowned faculty with close ties to the capital city's political decision makers as well as to the business community. The MAEA allows for an additional interdisciplinary specializations in either Regional Economic Development or Trade and International Development.[10] The curriculum combines courses in economics and business administration with geography in collaboration with the CRED, the World Trade Institute and Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research.[11]
