Channel 1 (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) was the first Egyptian TV channel and public entertainment channel owned and operated by Egyptian Radio and Television Union. It broadcast and aired programs from the Maspero building.[1]

History

Egyptian Television Channel 1 was first aired on 21 July 1960 as Egyptian Arab Television (EAT) on VHF channel 5 in 10 kw transmitter produced by RCA from America.[2] Second channel, Second Program was launched on 4 November 1961. It originally renamed as First Program (later it legalized as Al-Oula and Al-Thaniya). Third channel, Third Program was launched on 24 July 1963, but the 3rd program was temporarily ended transmission in 1967 due to Egypt’s loss in the Six-Day War and economic outbreak. Channel 3 was relaunched in 1985 as Cairo Channel.[3]

ERTU 1 and ERTU 2 started airing color programs on 25 December 1973 in Christmas Days in SECAM-B (same as France and Soviet Union), with Channel 1 began airing color on 25 December at 11:47am while Channel 2 began airing color in the same day at 9pm, with the first color program being a speech by Anwar Sadat on Israeli aggression in the Yom Kippur War. In 1977 during Sadat’s visit to Israel, it began airing in full color on both channels.

On 1 May 1991, ERTU transitioned from analog SECAM color TV broadcasting to PAL during Hosni Mubarak as president. The channel played a role in the 2010-2011 Egyptian Revolution, leading to the collapse of Mubarak’s regime. Now, the channel is part of the National Media Authority (NMA) under the Ministry of Information in the Prime Minister’s Offices of the Arab Republic of Egypt since 2017 until the present.
