Chanty Beluga (ˈʧænti bəˈluɡə) is a fictional character created and portrayed by comedian Courtney O'Donnell. Chanty's creation was a happy accident, during the final stretches of an improvised 10-day movie shoot (for Stephanie, Bride to Be) in Brooklyn, New York. While the name started as an inside joke between cast mates, the charming millennial persona quickly grew after Chanty shared short, simple interactions of her everyday life on Instagram

Apart from the bubbly personality (and quirky name), the character drew large amounts of engagement across Instagram, X, and TikTok as short clips of her (largely posted by O'Donnell) because of the shared 'niche' and insider-group sentiment among users who interacted with Chanty's posts, as well as other like-minded fans in comment sections.

Chanty's rise to niche fame provoked the creation of numerous accounts (across all platforms) that ranged from admiring and revering O'Donnell's character, all the way to denying her existence and hating her guts. These accounts were likely created satirically, encouraging the continued interest in the simple yet complex persona behind Chanty Beluga.

Chanty Beluga's recognizable roles

Chanty's recognizable and well-known short clips consist of her getting in an uber, introducing herself at a pool party, ordering takeout, and auditioning for the role of "Cryptkeeper in the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen Sequel"[1] (another satirical and borderline nonsensical joke, which is the main reason for continued engagement across all platforms). O'Donnell also claims that the name "Chanty Beluga" has a certain intonation that rolls off the tongue 'like crack,' which is another likely factor towards the speedy rise to fame.[2]
