The Lovers is an independent Tagalog/Taglish animated film about the romantic tension between a seafood chef and a siren, set in a dark fantasy Philippines, directed by Sophia Paez and produced by Studio Heartbreak. It is currently in development.[1]
The Lovers embraces colloquial Tagalog and Taglish to immerse the viewer into the unique dynamics of a Filipino family. The film explores mature themes, delving into the complexities of repression, love, generational trauma, body horror, and the intricacies of desire and identity.[2]
Plot[edit]
The Lovers follows Sara Lim Baylon (Vanille Velasquez), a reluctant seafood chef from Binondo, Manila. As the youngest member of her family to run their restaurant, Sara faces the daunting pressure to live up to her late father's reputation and keep the business afloat. When the governor's inauguration dinner is planned at the restaurant, featuring a sirena (Dawn M. Bennett - Fire Emblem, Honkai: Star Rail, My Hero Academia) as the centerpiece, Sara finds herself drawn into a dangerous affair with the mythical creature.[3]

Production and release[edit]
The Lovers is the debut film of Studio Heartbreak, an independent animation studio and production company run by a young and diverse creative team of twentysomethings assembled from around the world, formed when two students were rejected from every art internship they applied to one summer.[2] The studio’s team members have worked for animation studios including Powerhouse, Pierrot, Mappa Studio, and The Line and have also contributed to titles such as Attack on Titan, Legend of Pipi, Chiaki’s Journey, Boruto and others.[2]
Just over a day after the Kickstarter page for the project went live with a goal of raising USD$60,000 (about P$3.35 million), the project had already exceeded its target, with around USD$200000.[4]
On the art department they have Christina Zhang who have previously worked on films like Her and Fountains of Deceit.
The Lovers is estimated to be released in early 2025.[2]
