Charla Fischer
General
Charla R. Fischer is an American orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgical treatment of spinal disorders. she has expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery and is Director of communications for Quality and Patient Safety for the Department of Orthopedics at New York Presbyterian- Columbia University Medical Center.
Early Life and Education
Fischer was born in Northern California, in the city of Sacramento. Her father, Charles B. Roland, was an anesthesiologist. she became interested in medicine after her father took her on a tour of the hospital in junior high. she attended the University of Southern California on full tuition academic scholarship. She participated in the Baccalaureate MD program during her time as an Undergraduate. Due to her excellent performance in this program, she was awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Keck school of Medicine at the University of Southern California. During her time in medical school, she became interested in orthopedics after a busy rotation on the Orthopedic Trauma service. She underwent her orthopedic residency training at New York Presbyterian- Columbia University Medical Center. She attended her spine fellowship at NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases.
Career
Dr. Fischer joined the New York Presbyterian- Columbia University Medical Center in 2012 as an orthopedic spine surgeon. She is an Assistant Professor at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is an attending surgeon at the New York Presbyterian hospital. She has been the on the orthopedic department Quality and Patient Safety Committee since 2012 and was named Director of Communications for Quality and Patient Safety in 2015.
Quality and Patient Safety
As director of Communications for Quality and Patient Safety in 2015, Dr. Fischer has developed a protocol to decrease the risk of thoracolumbar spine infections, improve press Ganey pain scores for after surgery and continues to work towards reducing variability and improving patient flow and outcomes.
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Dr. Fischer has expertise in the areas of minimally invasive spine surgery and robotic assisted spine surgery. She performs hundreds of these cases per year and published research on the effectiveness of these techniques.
