Charles W. Herbster

Charles Wesley Herbster is a rancher, farmer, businessperson, and politician based in Falls City, Nebraska. He is the CEO of multi-level marketing firm, Conklin Company, Inc. He is also a prominent cattle breeder and ran for governor of Nebraska in 2013. He is again running in 2021.

Personal life[edit]

While students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Herbster married Lorienne Gayle Smith in 1975.[1][2] In 1982, He married Judith Ann Wagg, whom he met through his work at Conklin Company.[3]

Agricultural career[edit]

Herbster stated his farming practice was inspired in part by champion grower, Francis Childs, known for his heavy use of chemicals and deep plowing methods.[4]

Herbster is owner of the Kansas City-based multi-level marketing firm, Conklin Company Inc, which he purchased from Bob Conklin with his wife, Judith, in 1992.[3][5] Conklin sells agricultural products including pesticide additives, farm fertilizers, probiotics for livestock, industrial roof coatings, and motor oils. Additional businesses Herbster owns are Herbster Angus Farms in Falls City, Nebraska, and the cattle breeding firm, North American Breeders in Berryville, Virginia.[6] As a breeder, Herbster purchased multiple cows for over $100,000 and multiple bulls for over $600,000 from Schaff's Angus Valley for his ranch, North American Breeders. In February of 2019, Herbster purchased the highest-priced bull in auction history, paying $1.5 million for a bull called SAV America (SAV stand for Schaff's Angus Valley), which would be used as breeding stock on Herbster's Virginia farm.[7]

Political career[edit]

Herbster entered the 2014 Nebraska governor's race and hired Carlos Castillo to manage his campaign. Castillo was well known for his role as Dave Heineman's campaign manager in Heineman's successful 2006 Governors race. Herbster left the race in August of 2013 after his wife had heart surgery. He then gave his support to Beau McCoy.[8] Herbster is professionally close to Heineman as well, with Heineman on the Conklin company board of directors and a member of the board of Herbster's philanthropic foundation, the Charles W. Herbster Foundation. The foundation offers higher education scholarships to the children of Conklin sales agents.[9]

With the election of Donald Trump to U.S. President in 2016, Herbster became involved in national politics. Herbster had known the Trump family since 2005[6] and served as leader of the Trump campaign's agricultural and rural advisory committee. Herbster's connection to Trump included attending Trump events and parties, being at Trump Tower in 2015 when Trump rode down the escalator and announced his campaign for president, attending the 2020 State of the Union Address, and attending Trump's January 6 rally before the 2021 United States Capitol attack.[10] Herbster was listed as a possible pick for U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under in November, 2016, days after Trumps election.[11] Sonny Perdue was announced to that position in January 2017, and 14 trade groups including the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska called on Trump to choose Herbster as deputy secretary to the Agriculture Department.[6]

In 2021, Herbster began a campaign for the 2022 Nebraska gubernatorial election. Opposition to Critical Race Theory is a central piece of his campaign.[12]
