ChessKid.com is an internet chess server and educational site that provides a range of chess-related resources to educators, chess clubs, and children. It is a subsidiary of Chess.com.[3] The site runs a freemium model, in which a wide variety of learning tools and lessons are free, with additional features offered behind a subscription. The site includes online safeguards to protect children.[4]

The company was founded in 2010 by chess enthusiast and internet entrepreneur Erik Allebest with his business partner Jarom Severson. In 2019, ChessKid launched its Indian chapter under the mentorship of grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand.[5]

Features

As an educational resource, ChessKid hosts an online library of videos, articles, follow-up exercises, chess puzzles, and lessons.[6] ChessKid's online lessons are narrated by Mike Klein, a FIDE Master.[7]

ChessKid develops dedicated materials for educators, including a curriculum, with the goal of making teaching and learning chess easy to learn in elementary school classrooms.[8]

ChessKid has a guardianship program for parents and authorised coaches to monitor a child's progress.[9]

ChessKid features no advertising.

Social Initiatives

ChessKid Grants

ChessKid is used as an educational resource in some primary schools and elementary schools. ChessKid has a partnership with Chess in Schools and Communities (CISC) to widen access to chess resources.[10] Jointly, their united goal was to get one million children playing online chess during the COVID-19 pandemic.[11]

Levy Rozman Scholarship Fund

In 2021, ChessKid worked with content creator Levy Rozman to launch the ‘Levy Rozman Scholarship Fund’.[12] The partnership saw ChessKid help Rozman allocate $100,000 to educational chess programs in United States schools, funds used to purchase supplies and fund tournament travel.[13]

Chess In Slums

In 2020, ChessKid formed a partnership with Chess In Slums Africa, a nonprofit organization founded by Tunde Onayoka.[14] Through their ‘Chess Across Borders’ initiative, Onoyoka has taught children to play chess in the Majidun Ikorodu in Lagos, Nigeria, and the children living under the Odoshi Underbridge. As a partner of Chess in Slums Africa, ChessKid has provided resources to aid initiatives. In an article published by The Times, Richard Assheton stated “the initiative has also had funding and learning materials from ChessKid".[15]
