Chevrolet panel truck

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Chevrolet panel truck is a panel truck of the Chevrolet Suburban, it was made from 1935 to 1968.

History[edit]

Chevrolet started making commercial variants of the Suburban in 1935, which were marketed as a stronger variant than the sedan delivery models that were offered in 1920-1930.

First generation (1935–1940)[edit]

The first generation was just a cargo version of the Chevrolet Suburban and was popular among tradesmen who wanted a more heavy-duty vehicle than the sedan deliveries Chevy was offering from 1921 to 1935. It also had a metal body and a stronger chassis which helped its way into the panel truck market that existed at the time.[1]

Second generation (1941–1946)[edit]

The second generation of panel trucks made by Chevy was made in the rolling chassis of the second-generation Chevy Suburban, unlike the first generation, it never offered a high-roof version, but offered a windowed version. Like the first generation, it also offered a canopy express model.

Third Genereation (1948-1955)[edit]

Chevrolet Advance Design panel truck

The third generation was made on the Advanced Design Suburban rolling chassis and was the last to offer canopy express models. The Chevrolet Advance Design panel truck was and still is the most popular vintage van vehicle, with its unique rounded design responsible for that, which lead to the development of the Chevrolet HHR Panel.

Fourth Generation (1955-1959)[edit]

The fourth-generation was made in the rolling chassis of the Task Force Suburban and its production lasted only one year but it managed to sell 190,000 models worldwide.[2]4 wheel drive was optional in the Suburbans from 1955 to 1956 but was not available for the panel truck models until early 1958. In some European countries, the panel truck models had a second row and third row of seats, even though the windows were covered.

Fifth Generation (1960-1966)[edit]

1965 Chevrolet panel truck

The fifth-generation introduced a new styling for the panel truck models. It managed to sell 150,038 models in 1961-1964 but only roughly only 155 models in 1965 due to the popularity that the Chevrolet Chevy Van started having. Despite the poor sales of the panel truck in 1965, Chevrolet released another panel truck generation for the Chevrolet Suburban.

Sixth Generation (1967-1970)[edit]

1968 Chevrolet panel truck

The sixth-generation was made in the rolling chassis of the Chevrolet Suburban of the time but featured some parts and components from the previous generation. It eventually was canceled due to the big success of the Chevy van. No more panel truck models were made, apart from the retro HHR.
