Chittaranjan Deb (28 March 1924 – 13 June 2010) was a Bengali poet, essayist and researcher of Rabindra Sangeet based in Shantiniketan. The Rabindra Sanskriti Parishad awarded him with the title of Rabindra Tattvacharya for his lifelong research and contribution to literature.

Early life and education

Deb was born on 28 March 1924 to a Bengali (Sylheti) family in the village of Chhatiain in Sylhet District, Assam Province. He joined the local school in his area and then went to University of Calcutta where he ranked second in the matriculation examination. Aged only 17 years, he then moved to Shantiniketan and studied at the Rabindra Bharati University.

Career

Deb was very much influenced by Nobel Laureate Sir Rabindranath Tagore FRAS. He joined the Rabindra Parisad and worked for a long time under Nobel Laureate Sir Rabindranath Tagore FRAS. At the age of 15 years only, Deb published his first work of Bengali poetry titled "Mon Sanjoli". Two years later, he went to live in Shantiniketan and he joined the Archival Section-A of Rabindra Parisad in 1943. Deb wrote numerous research articles on diverse subjects in Desh magazine over a span of nearly forty-five years. His poignant story Mamatar Hridoy Sporshi Golpo earned him a national award and was later translated into twenty-one languages worldwide. He also compiled Rabindra Rachanakosha, a comprehensive index of all the writings of Nobel Laureate Sir Rabindranath Tagore FRAS.

Deb hailed from the Sylhet region and he has written books like Banglar Polli Geeti, Polli Geeti O Purbo Bongo and Banglar Lokogeet Kotha to cover the research of Eastern Bengali dialects like the one spoken in his home region of Sylhet.


Personal life

Poet Chittaranjan Dev’s wife was the late Roma Deb. His elder son, Dr. Chirajyoti Deb, is a senior research scientist at Orlando Health in Florida, United States. His younger son, Dr. Nilanjan Deb, is an inventor and serves as a full professor at the University of Calcutta in West Bengal.
