Chol Deng Thon Abel is a South Sudanese politician. He hails from Malakal town of Upper Nile State.
Chol Deng Thon was born in Malakal town of Upper Nile State, in the year 1976.
Education Background
Chol Deng graduated with Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Khartoum, Sudan in 2002.[1][2]
He holds Master's Degree in Municipal Water and infrastructure from UNSCO-IHE
Chol Deng Thon is a Ph.D holder from the University of Delft
Employment History
Chol Deng worked as a civil engineer at Irrigation Works Corporation following his graduation from the University of Khartoum.
From 2005 to 2007, he then joined Lahmeyer Consulting Engineers as a soil laboratory engineer during the construction of Merowe Dam.[3]
Chol was first employed as a Civil Engineer at Irrigation Works Corporation, and eventually as a Soil Laboratory Engineer during the construction of Merowe Dam from 2005 to 2007.[4]
In April 2007, Chol Deng took the role of Assistant Coordinator for the South Sudan Hydro Power Project as part of the Dams Implementation Units (DIU) of the Sudan Presidency, and finally held the Managing Director position of South Sudan's National Oil Company, Nile Pet.

Chol Deng Thon Abel was awarded a Joint Japan and World Bank Scholarship Programme in 2010 to pursue a Master's degree in Municipal Water and Infrastructure at UNESCO-IHE, followed by a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) study entitled “Soil Aquifer Treatment: Assessment and Applicability of Primary Effluent Reuse in Developing Countries”[5] at Delft University of Technology, both of which were supported financially by UNESCO-IHE in partnership with the Research Fund.[6][7]
Appointment[edit]
In 2017, Chol was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of State Oil Company Nile Petroleum Corporation (NilePet).[8] In September 2020, President Salva Kiir issued a Republican decree relieving Chol from his job and appointing Bol Muorwel in his place.[9][10]
However, in October 2021, President Salva Kiir reappointed Chol to his former role as Managing Director of Nile Petroleum Corporation[11][12] before dismissing him again in January 2023 and replacing him with Engineer Bernard Makeny.[13] Chol Deng Thon achieved the honor of having the longest tenure as Managing Director of the nationally renowned oil firm, Nile Petroleum.[14]
