Christophe & Co is a manufacturer of highly exclusive limited edition men's jewellery bracelets, founded by Aleksandr Bernhard.[1] Their cuff bracelets are known as Armills and are claimed to be a modern interpretation of the historical armillas which have ancient origins as both military decorations for valor in battle, and as symbols of royal appointment.[2] The pieces are designed by the well known Italian design house Pininfarina and feature a combination of 18k solid gold, high grade diamonds, carbon fibre, and Yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics. When launched in 2015, they were the first company to integrate a self charging Wearable Technology element [3] into an haute jewellery piece and were also said to be the world's most expensive example of wearable technology at the time.[4] Each piece is bespoke to the individual client and includes a service element whereby clients are considered 'members' and are granted access to certain events and venues internationally.[5]

Products[edit]

Their flagship 'Armills' are a cuff bracelet with different model tiers at varying price points, production numbers, and features.[6] The most exclusive model named 'Apollo' is limited to 25 pieces and its defining features are commissioned engravings by UK based artist Maryam Golubeva, over 1500 micropave set diamonds, and a high polish finish on the cermic 'shield'.[7] The second tier model known as 'Orion' is limited to 100 pieces and features satin finished ceramics and channel set diamonds. The third tier piece known as 'Virtus' is limited to 300 pieces and also features satin ceramics and micro-engraved phrases in three languages, said by the company to be inspired by the Rosetta Stone.[8]

Design[edit]

The Christophe & Co styling partner is Pininfarina, the famous Italian design house known for their design of exotic sports cars such as Ferrari and Maserati.[9]

Manufacturing & Materials[edit]

Unlike conventional fine jewellery pieces which are created using lost-wax casting methods and welded together, the Christophe & Co Armills employ a combination of hand crafted jewellery techniques with advanced engineering and precision machining of solid gold blanks. This allows for much higher tolerances to be met in the final assembly which is composed of dozens of precision components. The yttria-stabilised zirconia 'Shields' are said to be the most complex pieces of aesthetic ceramics ever created.[10] The Carbon Fibre components are machined from a solid billet and are manufactured by a British supplier of aerodynamic components to Formula 1 teams.[11] Because of these manufacturing complexities, expense of materials and components, and the fact that each piece is made in England, the price points of the Christophe & Co Armills tend to approach those of very exclusive watches.

Wearable Technology[edit]

Christophe & Co offers the option of an embedded technology module for the Apollo, Orion, and Virtus models. This module is said to be fully upgradeable so-as to prevent obsolescence. The electronics employ a variety of communication methods including Near Field Communication and Bluetooth for connectivity and interaction with authorised devices. The batteries are charged by way of a power management circuit which harvests kinetic energy from the movement of the user's arm, similar to the way an Autoquartz movement works in a watch.[12]

Services[edit]

As part of membership included with the purchase of the top three model Armills, included is a lifestyle management 'Concierge' service via their companion mobile application and special access to a number of exclusive events around the world. The level of services varies depending on the model.[13]
