Maria Dorai-Raj (born 8 July 1983) is an Irish jewelry designer.

Education[edit]

Dorai Raj is of Irish and Indian parentage and was born in Galway in the West of Ireland.[1][2] She was educated at the Alchimia School of Contemporary Jewelry in Florence, Italy. With a degree in ceramic design and a background in luxury fashion, she obtained an apprenticeship with an established Irish jeweller in Dublin.[3]

Career[edit]

In 2013, Dorai Raj launched her first jewellery collection. That same year her work was selected for ‘Create’, a prestigious Irish Design showcase held in Brown Thomas, of the Selfridges group and continued to feature in the showcase each year for two consecutive years.[4] The work in Brown Thomas reflected her Irish-Indian heritage.[5]

Rachel Maria Walsh, writing for the Irish Examiner about her work in the 2013 Paris Fashion Week, wrote that "Maria Dorai Raj's striking sculptural jewellery is unlike anything I've seen with a 'Made in Ireland' label."[6] In 2015 Dorai Raj’s jewellery line Dorai Raj was shown as part of ‘UNFOLD’[7] design collective in the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London as part of London Fashion Week. ‘UNFOLD’ was an Irish design collective made up of 11 of Ireland's leading designers selected by a panel representing the Irish Design and Crafts Council as part of ID2015.[8]
