The Honourable Justice Christopher Horan is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, serving since 5 September 2023.[1][2]

Early life and education

Justice Horan graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) in 1990.[3]

Legal career

Justice Horan was admitted in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1992 and commenced practice at the Victorian Bar in 2000; he took silk in 2015.[1] Early in his career he practised as a solicitor at Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks and served as Associate to then High Court Justice Sir Gerard Brennan in 1993. From 1994 to 2000 he worked in the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, including in the Office of General Counsel and as Counsel Assisting the Solicitor-General.[3] At the Bar he appeared in administrative and constitutional law, migration, revenue, native title, and commercial and equity matters.[3]

Judicial career

The Attorney-General announced Justice Horan’s appointment on 1 September 2023, with his commission commencing on 5 September 2023 in the Melbourne Registry.[2][1] A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court to welcome Justice Horan was held on 20 October 2023, with speeches published by the Court and professional bodies.[4][5]
