Christopher Shane Hyde is an American murderer who was sentenced to death for murdering three people during a funeral home robbery in Sumiton, Alabama in 2003. He committed the murders only four months after he was released from prison in Florida for attempted murder.[2][3]
Crimes
Hyde's criminal activity began in Florida, when, on January 16, 1993, he beat and injured Raymond Davies, who was paraplegic, with a tire iron, then stole his wallet and car. He was subsequently convicted of attempted murder, robbery and vehicle theft and was sentenced to 17 years in prison, but was released after serving 8 1/2 years for good behavior.[4] On March 26, 2003, four months after being released from prison in November, Hyde shot and killed three people at the Bell Funeral Home in Sumiton, Alabama, then robbed them of their wallets and fled in a stolen truck. The victims were June Williams, 61, the funeral home manager, Rick Peterson, 50, a pastor at a nearby church, and Randle Lane, 66, a delivery truck driver who was the manager of a casket making company.[5] Hyde was arrested the same day as the murders in Atlanta after authorities tracked down the Greyhound Bus he was traveling on. He had earlier ditched the stolen pickup truck, which belonged to Peterson, at a gas station back in Alabama.[6]
Aftermath
In February 2005, Hyde was convicted of capital murder for the funeral home shootings. The following month, a judge sentenced him to death based on a 10-2 vote decision by a jury.[7] In February 2009, the Alabama Supreme Court turned down Hyde's appeal.[8]
