Dr. Clara Higuera Cabañes (born 1983) is a Spanish data scientist [es] and researcher. In 2001 she won First Prize in the Spanish X Certamen Young Researchers and was then selected to represent Spain in the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in 2002 in Vienna.[1]

Her diverse interests have spanned data science, machine learning, computational biology, genetic algorithms, Generative Models for NLP, artificial intelligence[6], data mining, supervised classification, self-organising maps, gene expression, bioinformatics, and scholarly communication.[5][6][4][7] Amongst other countries, Clara has lived and worked in the USA[6][8], England[5][7], and Sweden[6]. She presently resides in Spain[3].

Clara was an academic from 2001 until 2015 when she earned her PhD[4]. She has presented at industry conferences[9], and has also continues to author and co-author peer-reviewed academic publications (that are regularly cited[10]), including contributions to journals [11]. Her advocacy for the data sciences has included appearances on Spanish television.[12]

She is actively involved in pursuits that encourage women and girls to pursue careers in technology and science to help bridge the gender gap in these disciplines[3]. As an advocate for inculcating interest in STEM in the next generation she has been undertaken such activities as introducing school children to data science.[13]

Education[edit]

In 2001 Clara read Computer Science at the Complutense University of Madrid[6]. From 2010 to 2015 she worked as a research and teaching assistant while attending Complutense University of Madrid in both the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology II and Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence with an interest in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and Computer Science[6]. Clara earned an MSc in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and then also a second MSc through research in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), both were awarded in 2010 from Complutense University of Madrid.[14]

As a visiting PhD student in 2013 she attended the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.[6] and Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA[6]. At the Karolinska Institutet she worked with a research group in the Science for Life Laboratory. At the Virginia Commonwealth University she worked within the Department of Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics Research Group - examining the automatic extraction of critical proteins related to learning in control and Down Syndrome mice[8] Clara defended her PhD (Cum Laude) in 2015[4] at the Complutense University of Madrid. Throughout her PhD years she designed and applied different artificial intelligence methods for the resolution of new biological problems. Her projects were mainly related to optimization and data analysis using machine learning methods.[6]

Career[edit]

Clara commenced her formal career as a data scientist working for the Spanish ElDiario.es.[3] In 2017 she joined the BBC and worked in BBC News in the Audience Engagement team as data scientist helping to better understand BBC News audience and build data products with the help of data and Machine Learning.[5][7] In 2019 Clara joined Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria's AI Factory as a Data Scientist and in 2021 become Lead Data Scientist.[3][7][15]
