Clever Real Estate is an American real estate technology company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.[1] Founded in 2017, the company operates a nationwide agent matching platform that connects home buyers and sellers with real estate agents who agree to reduced commission fees.[2][3] Its network includes more than 14,000 affiliated agents across all 50 states, and agents who work with the platform agree to offer discounted commission rates to clients who engage them through Clever.[4][5][6]

History

Clever Real Estate was founded in 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri, by entrepreneurs Ben Mizes and Luke Babich.[7][8] That same year, the company closed $500,000 in seed funding from Midwest venture capital firms and individual investors.[9]

In 2019, the company raised $2 million in a Series A funding round, followed by an $8 million Series B round in 2021.[10][11][12] By late 2021, Clever planned to increase its staff to approximately 200 employees and had expanded its agent-matching platform nationwide.[13]

In 2023, Clever launched Clever Pro, a business unit focused on partnerships with mortgage lenders and technology providers.[14] Later that year, Clever Pro partnered with HomeScout, a real estate search and engagement platform, to expand its offerings for lenders and servicers.[15][16][17]

In January 2024, Clever acquired Gravy Technologies, a renter rewards and savings application.[18][19]

Later in 2024, Clever launched Clever Title, a title and escrow subsidiary.[20][21][22]

Clever also operates Clever Offers, a platform that connects home sellers with institutional buyers and local investors. The platform is considered part of the wider house-buying sector, where companies typically acquire properties for cash to enable expedited, as-is sales.[23][24][25][26]

Recognition

In 2023, Chief executive officer Luke Babich was recognized with a Vanguard Award for contributions to housing innovation, while head of account management Tim Gaasch was named a recipient of the Insiders Award for operational leadership.[27][28] In 2025, Drake Shadwell, manager of Clever Offers, was included in HousingWire’s Rising Stars list.[29][30]

Products and services

Clever Real Estate operates in the discount real estate brokerage sector alongside companies such as Redfin and Ideal Agent.

Agent matching platform

The company’s core service is an agent referral platform. Industry reviews have noted that home sellers referred through Clever typically pay a 1.5% listing fee (minimum $3,000).[31][32]

Rather than charging agents directly for leads, Clever collects referral fees when transactions are completed. Partner agents pay the company a percentage of their commission after successfully closing a deal with a Clever-referred client.[33] In some states, Clever also offers cash-back rebates to buyers who use the platform to connect with participating agents.[34]

Clever Offers

Clever also operates Clever Offers, a free service that connects home sellers with institutional buyers and local investors interested in purchasing homes for cash. Sellers using the service can choose between accepting a cash offer or listing with an agent for a potentially higher sale price.[35][36]

Clever Title

In 2024, the company launched Clever Title, a title and escrow subsidiary. Industry coverage described the service as technology-focused and aiming to streamline closing processes and increase transparency.[37][38]

Clever Pro

Clever launched Clever Pro in 2023 as a product suite designed for mortgage lenders. Coverage has described the service as offering marketing tools and borrower engagement systems intended to assist lenders with lead conversion and customer engagement.[39][40][41]
