Climaco is a surname in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. It is derived from the Ancient Greek word Klimax, meaning 'Ladder' or 'Staircase', this fact is supported by the medical etymology term for Climacophobia, which is the fear of climbing or falling from stairs.[1] The likely origins of the name hails from the Orthodox Christian monk St. John Climacus, also called John of the Ladder, from the 6th and 7th centuries from Mount Sinai,[2] who wrote a book about the 'ladder to divine ascension'.[3]

This surname name has spread over the centuries in various regions of the world especially in Southern Europe, with settlements in Latin America and The Philippines.

Nobility and Coat of Arms

The nobility of the family is noted due to the presence in the heraldic work "Repertorio de Blasones de la comunidad Hispánica - letras ABC-CH" (Coats of arms collection of the Hispanic community - letters ABC-CH) by Vicente de Cadenas y Vicent. In this work Don Vicente de Cadenas y Vicent, who was the last Chronicler King of Arms appointed by the Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Spain describes on page 509 the coat of arms of the Climaco family as: in gold, a sinople oak, with two ravissant wolves stacked at its trunk.[4]
