ClimateScience

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

ClimateScience Ltd is a UK non-profit educational organisation[1] with the goal of creating online resources to educate people of all demographics on climate change and its solutions[2]. Founded in 2019[3] by Eric Steinberger and Isabel Key, ClimateScience produces a wide variety of content including courses, children's books, quizzes, YouTube videos and informative social media posts.[4] [5] They host a global competition called the ClimateScience Olympiad in which students and young people around the world are tasked with coming up with solutions to specific climate problems, competing for US$10,000. [2] [6] [7] All online resources are available for free to individuals and schools.

History[edit]

The organization started in 2019 when Eric Steinberger and fellow Cambridge University peer Isabel Key realized how difficult it was to find reliable and accessible content on solutions to climate change.[8] [9] They decided to create an Instagram account where they would post climate change facts with relevant cartoons.[8] After 2 months the Instagram account had gained over 40,000 followers and educators started using their content in schools.[8]

These positive responses led Eric to withdraw from his studies at Cambridge to focus full-time on creating educational content with an emphasis on climate solutions.[10] Amid the shift to a virtual world, brought on by COVID-19, ClimateScience quickly grew to a team of over 260 volunteers (March 2021) from over 30 countries.[11] They gained an official charity status in August 2020.[1]

Funding[edit]

ClimateScience is a nonprofit organization, mostly funded by donations coming from philanthropic organisations.[12] In 2020 ClimateScience was financially supported primarily by Schmidt Futures and several other donors.[12]

Content[edit]

Courses on climate solutions[edit]

ClimateScience provides free educational resources focused on climate solutions.[4] Their website hosts a suite of 11 courses, each containing several chapters.[13] The courses aim to promote solution-orientated thinking within the readers by focusing primarily on climate change solutions (rather than just its problems).

Each chapter features several illustrations created by ClimateScience to help explain concepts and engage readers through aesthetic visuals.[13] They also feature several questions for the user to test their knowledge on the subject and, at the end of each course, there is a final quiz to test the user’s knowledge on the whole course.[14]

All courses are available on the ClimateScience app alongside 725+ quiz questions from over 20 different quiz categories.[5] These quizzes act as an extension to course content and allow the user to gain points to compete on a global leaderboard.[5]

Children's book series "Saving Planet Earthly"[edit]

ClimateScience released their first children's book in October 2020 and plan to release eight more books in 2021.[15] “Earthly” is the main character of the series and appears in each book. She also frequently appears on ClimateScience’s social media posts and courses. Each story takes place in a different setting, in a different country with different characters, and aims to teach children about various problems related to climate change and their corresponding solutions.[15]

Communities[edit]

ClimateScience Community was set up to act as a bridge between the educational content and users by enabling communities to bring science-based climate education to people around the world.[16] Currently, there are 15 active communities around the world[17] who reach out to schools, make local partnerships, and spread climate education.[12]

Olympiad[edit]

The ClimateScience Olympiad is a global problem-solving competition in which participants are tasked with finding solutions to real climate problems.[6] [2] This event hosts 10,000 participants and offers a unique opportunity for youth to become empowered to take climate action and to think critically about how to solve climate change.[6] [2] Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Olympiad is currently being held remotely.[6] [2]
