Osem - Better than Classroom is a free-to-play revision app for UPSR, PT3, and SPM students, featuring multiplayer game-style question battles, note-sharing, and a homework helper, to help them score better in examinations. It was developed and published by Pencil Brand Sdn Bhd for iOS and Android devices.[1]
The application was first released on the Android platform in Malaysia on December 16, 2016. It was then released on the iOS platform on January 19, 2017. Available on the App Store and Google Play, as well as online and offline, its aim is to make revision more effective and engaging for primary and secondary students. It provides the latest syllabus KBAT standards and a large question bank with HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) questions to meet the needs of Malaysian students and the standards of the Ministry of Education in Malaysia.
Revision Gameplay
Players can choose between two modes: Study or Battle.
- Study – The app automatically presents questions based on the selected education level. In Study mode, players must answer ten (10) questions correctly. Players start with three (3) "hearts" as lives. Incorrect answers result in a loss of a life. When all three (3) hearts are used, the game ends.
- Battle – In Battle mode, players use their mobile device's internet connection to find and challenge other students online, matching based on education level. Battles are between two (2) players. Incorrect answers result in a loss of a life. Players must answer questions correctly and quickly to win against their opponents.
Rewards
The Rewards feature is a key part of the app, rewarding students for learning. Players earn gold coins by winning Battle mode or answering questions correctly in Study mode. Gold coins can be used to claim desired rewards. In January 2017, players aged twelve (12) to fifteen (15) won PlayStation 4, action cameras, tickets to Sunway Lagoon, The Lost World of Tambun, Legoland, and other prizes.

- ASK Community: A platform for students to ask questions or get help with homework.
- Notes: A feature allowing players to create or share notes with others.
- Bookmarks: Allows students to save questions and notes for quick review.

Content
By January 17, 2017, the app featured one thousand six hundred (1,600) teachers providing content for UPSR, PT3, and SPM questions and answers, aligning with the standards of the Ministry of Education in Malaysia. Questions are presented in various formats with colorful images, edited and enhanced by the internal content team of Pencil Brand Sdn Bhd.
Development
The Osem revision app concept was developed in early 2016 by the Directors of Pencil Brand Sdn Bhd as a way to make revision more convenient and enjoyable for students in the digital age. Osem was first released for Android platforms in December 2016, followed by iOS in January 2017.
Release
Within one month of its initial release, the revision app achieved over two thousand (2,000) downloads from the App Store and Google Play, with an average user rating of 4.8 stars across Malaysia. The app also offers in-app purchases for premium access to unlimited questions and other features without time restrictions.
