Clinton Ehrlich (born September 20, 1989) is a Visiting Researcher at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, who is known for being one of the only Westerners in Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] According to Foreign Policy, Ehrlich is embedded at the highest level of Moscow's national-security brain trust.[12]
Ehrlich became the subject of international controversy when he accused Hillary Clinton of threatening war with Russia.[13][14] Western media questioned whether Ehrlich had been recruited as a propaganda agent by Russian intelligence.[15][16] Ehrlich denied those allegations, claiming to have fully disclosed his connection to Russia's Foreign Ministry.[1]
Before his work in Moscow, Ehrlich was known for exonerating Raymond Lee Jennings, an Iraq-war veteran who spent 11 years in prison for allegedly murdering Michelle O'Keefe.[13][17][18]
Career
After dropping out of high school, Ehrlich researched missile defense at the Claremont Institute.[13][15] He won the national championship in policy debate while coaching Damien High School.[15] While in law school, Ehrlich rose to prominence for his work convincing the Los Angeles County District Attorney to release convicted murderer Raymond Lee Jennings from prison.[13] Ehrlich also operated a nutritional supplements company.[13]
In August 2016, Ehrlich became a Visiting Researcher at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.[13][15] Ehrlich works in the faculty of international law and says his research is focused on the Status-6 torpedo.[15] In September 2016, Ehrlich published a controversial article in Foreign Policy, which claimed that Russia preferred Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton because it believed that Trump would pursue a realist foreign policy.[12]
Views
Ehrlich has attracted controversy for expressing views that allegedly mirror the official positions of Russia's Foreign Ministry.[13][15] He denies these allegations and says he is an independent American expert embedded inside Russia's national-security brain trust.[1] Ehrlich contends that Hillary Clinton is attempting to start a new Cold War and that Donald Trump will be able to improve America's relations with Russia by using recognition of Crimea as a bargaining chip in negotiations.[12] He has also argued that realpolitik is the only way to create the predictability needed to preserve global stability.[12]
In an interview on BBC Newshour, Ehrlich claimed that American missile defense is dangerous and that conflict between the United States and Russia is the greatest threat to the world.[1] He said that he moved to Russia for greater intellectual freedom, because his views were not welcome inside American academia.[1] In order to demonstrate his independence from the Kremlin, Ehrlich has offered controversial opinions comparing Chechnya and the American Civil War.[13]
Ehrlich appeared on Russian state-sponsored radio with Ray McGovern, and the two debated whether Vladimir Putin preferred Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton.[2] McGovern claimed that Trump's threats to back out of the Iran nuclear deal framework made him undesirable to Russia, while Ehrlich insisted that the Russian government understood that those proclamations were campaign rhetoric for domestic consumption.[2]
