CloudZero, Inc. is a software-as-a-service company based in Boston, Massachusetts.[2][3][4] It provides a cloud cost intelligence platform and cloud cost management services.[5]
History
CloudZero was founded in 2016 by Erik Peterson and Matt Manger.[6] Prior to its inception, both founders had worked together at the application security company Veracode.[7]
Since its founding, CloudZero has been closely tied with Amazon Web Services (AWS)[8] and became an AWS Advanced Technology Partner in 2017.[9] In 2017, CloudZero announced the open source project CloudZero Reactor for AWS, which used the CloudZero platform to model an IT system's surface.[4]
CloudZero is certified by the FinOps Foundation.[10] CloudZero is also one of the companies participating in the steering committee for FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification), a FinOps Foundation project that aims to establish a common spec for cloud cost, usage, and billing data.[11]
CloudZero has partnered with organizations such as ProsperOps and Xosphere to help customers build cost-efficient software.[12]
Software and Services
CloudZero refers to its services as cloud cost intelligence.[5][13] CloudZero helps users understand and manage cloud costs by analyzing cost data and tracking the real-time cost impacts of engineering events.[13][14]
CloudZero’s cost platform is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that is built on AWS.[15] CloudZero uses machine learning algorithms to observe, learn, and automatically adjust to and alert clients about any unusual cost changes in their cloud systems down to the hour.[16]
The CloudZero platform offers the ability to analyze and group previously untagged cloud resources[17][18] and helps companies understand and optimize their AWS spending.[9] It does this by ingesting billing data from AWS, as well as information about engineering activity and resources, to provide hourly insights into AWS costs and what caused them.[19] In addition to AWS, CloudZero is also capable of tracking cost and usage data from other cloud and service providers such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Snowflake, Datadog, New Relic, MongoDB, and Databricks.[13][20]
Elements of CloudZero’s platform include CloudZero AnyCost, which normalizes all of a user’s cloud spend in a common data model, and CloudZero CostFormation, which uses billing and telemetry information to allocate all taggable and untaggable spend, including shared resources and multi-tenant architecture.[21]
CloudZero also has a cost per customer feature that enables SaaS companies to measure their monthly costs for each customer.[22] The company also allows companies using Kubernetes in their AWS and GCP environments to allocate costs within their Kubernetes clusters.[23][24]
In 2023, CloudZero launched Analytics, an automated cloud cost analytics feature that allows CloudZero users to visualize cloud costs related to short- and/or long-term strategic objectives.[25]
