Publication[edit]
The idea to produce the film Coast Guard Malaysia: Ops Helang started in 2017. It was directed by Pitt Hanif who had previously been an assistant director for several local films and had the full cooperation of the Ministry of the Interior (KDN); Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD); (FINAS) and Maritime Malaysia. It was also the first and last film directed by Pitt before his death in October 2019 due to a boating accident. The producer of this film, Muhammad Hady Yusry Makmor said, he along with the executive producer of Flying Deals, Rozita Mat Isa and the script writer, Jason Chong submitted an idea paper to Maritim Malaysia to produce this film. The film script was then produced with the help and advice of Maritime Malaysia through a series of discussions and improvements. According to him, after getting approval and funding for the national film project from FINAS, he collaborated with Arie Zaharie from Arie Zaharie Production who was interested in producing this film, which was initially co-directed by Hashim Rejab before withdrawing.
According to Arie Zaharie as the producer, it is the first film in Malaysia that highlights a maritime enforcement agency, particularly Maritime Malaysia as an enforcer of the country's laws and displays the capabilities and assets owned by Maritime Malaysia. He also explained the selection of Pitt as the director for this film because his "credibility in directing including acting and screenplay is one of the privileges" he has. He said: "His creativity in realizing the wishes of the script in addition to fulfilling the wishes of the producers was also one of the factors in his selection as the director of the film this time".
