Xiaoye "Coca" Xie (traditional Chinese: 謝曉曄; simplified Chinese: 谢晓晔, born October 16, 1990) is a Chinese-born television personality, host, and producer. She is founder and CEO of China Entertainment. For the past six years she has been living in the states, 2 years in Indiana, 1 year in NYC, and 3 years in Los Angeles. Xie is the first Chinese producer and host to work in a major American news organization (The Wrap).[1] She is also fluent in Mandarin and English.
Early life[edit]
Coca Xie was born in Changsha, capital of the Hunan province in China.[1] Her parents, both engineers, Jijun Xie(traditional Chinese: 謝季軍; simplified Chinese: 谢季军) and Jie Yang (traditional Chinese: 楊傑; simplified Chinese: 杨杰) work at China Railway Group Limited.[2] Jie Yang works in Human Resources, while Jijun continues to head up the infrastructural development as one of the company's presidents.[3] He is currently administering all of China Railway's Ports. Jijun Xie received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology and a master's degree in engineering management from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. Jie Yang graduated with a major in Civil Engineering and a minor in English education from Southwest University of Science and Technology. Xie grew up all over China, from large cities like Beijing, to rural western cities like Tianshui in Gansu. Having traveled all over China, it gave her the ability to distinguish many different dialects and accents.
Education[edit]
While born and raised in China, Xie received her two degrees from American institutions.
Beijing Jiaotong University[edit]
Coca Xie started her higher education at Beijing Jiaotong University in 2008. She studied law for two years (2008–10).
While at BJU, she worked in the Arts and Performance Department as manager of the news department at Jiaotong College Radio.
Ball State University[edit]
In 2010, Xie enrolled at Ball State University to pursue entertainment. She happened upon Ball State while going through an alphabetical list of American Universities and decided to research it. She discovered that it was David Letterman's alma mater, and being a huge fan of his, applied and got in.
In 2012 she received her bachelor's degree in telecommunications with a 3.5 GPA. During her time at Ball State she met and interviewed Steve Bell. In 1972 Bell was the bureau chief in Hong Kong, and in 1973 he and Ted Koppel took a direct approach to reporting by speaking with Chinese citizens rather than the government. It was this specific report about China that drew Xie to Bell, prompting her to create a documentary about him.[4] Bell went on to write Xie's letter of recommendation, garnering her admission into USC.
University of Southern California[edit]
Xie continued her education in America when she enrolled at the University of Southern California. She graduated with a Masters of Arts in Broadcast Journalism at Annenberg College, USC's school of communication and journalism, in 2015.[5]
Career[edit]
Early career[edit]
Radio[edit]
Coca Xie began her hosting career in 2008 at China National Radio. Being part of such a large broadcasting outlet, Xie covered many topics, but mainly focused on celebrity interviews within the music channel. Her channel reached an average of 650 million regular listeners worldwide. This time was during the Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she was also able to secure a second job at CNR as a journalist. Concurrently, she worked as a news anchor at her parents' company China Railway in Beijing from 2008 to 2010.
Following her stint at CNR, she entered a hosting competition, winning 260,000 votes and the opportunity to host the Top Chinese Music Awards in 2010. At 18, she was the youngest host in the Awards' show history.[6]
Continuing her experience in radio, Coca worked as a DJ and reporter at WCRD 91.3 FM. She hosted her own program called Coca's International Culture Show at Ball State. She ran a 50-minute weekly program, interviewing students from Hong Kong, Tokyo, Cameroon, and Sweden about the cultural differences, as well as culture shocks, presented by living in the United States.[7]
Post bachelor's[edit]
People's Daily[edit]
Following the completion of her bachelor's degree, Xie self-taped an introductory video showing off how bilingual she was. She sent it to three different media companies, and settled on People's Daily, where she worked as a video news provider and talk show host.
One of her most notable projects at People's Daily was her interview with Brian Buchwald, founder and CEO of Bomoda, where they discussed the Chinese economy, market, and Bomoda's new concept of fashion.[8]
American Stars[edit]
In 2013 while studying to receive her Master's, Xie narrowed her media coverage to entertainment where she worked on the show American Stars.[9]American Stars, distributed by ICN TV Network, is an international variety TV series that showcases talent (similar to America's Got Talent). She was the host and MC where one of her duties was to interview each contestant.[10]
Hollywood at Your Doorstep[edit]
Hollywood at Your Doorstep is a Tencent and FansTang produced and distributed show. Tailored for the Chinese audience, Xie interviewed Hollywood celebrities.[1] Doorstep has since become Tencent's most valuable broadcast program with 30 million viewers on average.[1]
Post master's[edit]
The Wrap[edit]
Xie started at The Wrap with the show The Weekly Wrap as the show's first bilingual moderator in September 2015.[1] The show is distributed through The Wrap on the American side, while iQiyi took care of distribution on the Chinese end. She is the show's content creator as well as the host. Xie also has a hand in post-production as well as promos.[11]
Fashion One News[edit]
In February 2016, Xie began hosting Fashion One News.[9] The show covers all things fashion, from celebrities to designers to upcoming trends. The show broadcasts throughout all of Hong Kong and Taiwan through the distributor Fashion One International under its parent company Bigfoot Entertainment.
Hollywood Says[edit]
Xie’s company China Entertainment's new endeavor is Hollywood Says (traditional Chinese: 好萊塢有話說 simplified Chinese: 好莱坞有话说; pinyin: Hao Lai Wu You Hua Shuo), a Tencent-backed entertainment program seeking to redefine cross-cultural entertainment. This program is a further exploration of combining two superpowers through entertainment. China Entertainment will begin production this year with the help of Richard Arlook of The Arlook Group, an American literary manager and producer.
Live events[edit]
Xie has worked many Red Carpets. She has been a red carpet journalist at five major award shows in Hollywood including: Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards (2014), MTV Video Music Awards (2014), Hollywood Film Awards (2014), American Music Awards (2014, 2015), Billboard Music Awards (2014, 2015, 2016).[9] Xie focused on interviewing stars about China-related questions in order to bring Chinese fans into Hollywood.
Most notably, she hosted a ceremony for the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring the famous Chinese director Feng Xiaogang.[12] The event was backed by SARFT and the Beijing Film and TV Bureau.
China Entertainment[edit]
In 2015, Xie founded her own company China Entertainment. The mission statement of China Entertainment is “to bridge the gap between China and America through the power of entertainment”, bringing Chinese fans closer to the happenings of Hollywood as well as bringing the Hollywood stars closer to a new, massive and often complex market. To support this endeavor, Xie partnered with Sting Jung (traditional Chinese: 張磊; simplified Chinese: 张磊; pinyin: Zhang Lei), an experienced businessman and producer, former head of CCTV’s advertising department, and the current CMO of CCTV Creative. Mr. Jung was instrumental in selling Hollywood Holler to Tencent.
Most recently, China Entertainment gained the exclusive rights to the sixty-part documentary, Charm of China with the Beijing Kangpute Cultural Development Company.[13]
"Charm of China will be the first Chinese documentary to offer an all-encompassing look into the cultural customs of China'snational minorities and the whole series will cover the most common and valued cultural aspects, including customs and religions for each minority group. It will not only show viewers the landscape and lifestyle of China but also highlight the history and the struggle of China's minority groups."[13]
