    Code_Aster is a free software for numerical simulation in structural mechanics.[1][2] developed mainly by the « Mechanical and Acoustical Analysis » department of EDF research and development department.

    ASTER stands for « Analyses des Structures et Thermomécanique pour des Études et des Recherches » ( « Structural Analysis and Thermomechanics for Studies and Research" » ) [3] . It is a complex software, the implementation of which began in 1989, to meet the internal needs of EDF. It was licensed under the GNU GPL in October 2001. The core of the system is coded in Fortran and many add-ons are made in Python. It contains more than one million lines of code, numerous test cases, as well as enormous documentation. Stabilized versions are broadcast about once per year as a package to be compiled. These versions can be updated weekly to the latest development version.

    It is mainly a solver[4], based on the continuum mechanics theory, which uses the finite element method to solve different types of problems : mechanical, thermal, acoustic, seismic, etc.

    Code_Aster main site[5] has a global ranking of 295,205 (lower is better) and 34,999 in France in 2018[6]; as such, it indicates a much more important worldwide community with respect to other free software in the same field (List of finite element software packages).

    There are many articles published that make reference to this software: more than 2,500 results for Google Scholar[7]. As indicated in the book "Beginning with Code_Aster"[8], published in 2013 : "With more than the 5,000 annual downloads -20,000 for SalomeMeca- and through the public forum, the independent users community -industrial and academic- is rising".

    The actual size of Code_Aster community is probably much larger, since this software is an important component of cloud services like SimScale and there is an growing community around its Windows porting[9], with downloads from more than 130 countries from all over the world. A Code_Aster professional network, named ProNet[10], shows an important number of industries, universities and service companies using it for business.

    Its source code is freely downloadable from the project site. The main Linux distributions as well as FreeBSD offer binary packages. Some versions for Windows are available, with almost the same functionality as Linux/Unix versions. There is also the LiveDVD CAE Linux[11][12] dedicated to CAD, which includes Code_Aster.

    In 2006, Code_Aster was crowned by the Lutèce d'Or price as the best free project realized by a large group[13]

    In 2016, a Code_Aster users day has been organized in Manchester, UK as reported by NAFEMS[14] (National Agency for Finite Element Methods and Standards).

    Independent comparisons indicate Code_Aster as one of the most complete[15][16] free solvers for structural analysis.

    Many companies use Code_Aster for their studies, for example SimScale[17], Airbus[18][19], Rolex[20], Valeo[21]
