Colby Gilbert (born 17 March 1995) is an American long-distance track runner.[2] Gilbert represented University Of Washington in cross country and track.[3] He was the 2016 Pac-12 Men's 5K Champion.[4]

Running career[edit]

Youth[edit]

Colby Gilbert was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington to parents of Carolynne and Chris Gilbert.[5] His mother and father both ran collegiality and met at the University of Portland.[6] He also has an younger brother, Chanse Gilbert, who ran track in High School[7]

Gilbert took up distance running when he was a high school student in Vancouver WA, starting in 9th grade.[8] He attended Skyview High School.

Collegiate[edit]

Gilbert was recruited by University of Washington in 2013.

Gilbert won the 2014 U.S. National Junior 5k title at the Hayward Field.[9][10] He then competed for Team USA at the 2014 IAAF Track & Field Junior Worlds where he finished 9th[11]

In 2014 NCAA Division 1 Cross Country season Gilbert was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the year.[12]

In the 2016 Indoor Track & Field season Gilbert became the 454th American to ever run under four minutes for a mile.[13] He won the UW Invitational Mile in 3:59.84.[14]

Leading up to the 2016 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships Gilbert upset Oregon Duck distance runner Edward Cheserek.[15][16] Gilbert ran a new personal best that day of 13:44.96.[17][18]

Later that same season Gilbert won the men’s 5,000-meter run at the Pacific-12 Conference outdoor track and field championships held for the first time at UW’s Husky Track by running a school record of 13.35.20.[19][20] Gilbert was one of three distance titles to help the Huskies to their best team finish ever.[21]

In 2017 UW Invitational Gilbert broke the Huskies school record in the 3000m in 7:45.71 which was the fastest 3000 meter time run by a collegiate in 2017.[22]

Shortly after graduating from the University of Washington, Gilbert, won $100,000 apart of Team NouGit at the EOS Global Hackathon San Francisco.[23] The vision behind NouGit is a decentralized platform that allows developers to contribute their code and get paid for their efforts.[24]
