Cole Dabney is an American music video director, film critic, filmmaker and producer. He founded the Austin Film Critics Association in 2005 while in high school and served as the organization's president until 2012.[1][2]
Film career[edit]
Education[edit]
Dabney attended Bowie High School in Austin, Texas where he was a member of the basketball team. Under Coach Celester Collier, he was awarded as an all-state player by Texas Basketball Magazine[3] and nominated for the McDonald's All-American Game.[4] He was also listed as one of the top basketball players in the nation for the High School Class of 2006, behind current NBA players Kevin Durant, Greg Oden, Brook Lopez, and Darrell Arthur.[5] After receiving scholarship offers from the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Texas State, West Point, University of Albany, and the University of North Texas, among others,[6] he chose to walk on at the men's basketball team at Texas Christian University under coach Neil Dougherty.[7] After an injury forced him to give up basketball, he transferred to the University of Texas where he studied Government and Radio-Television-Film.[8] During his undergraduate studies, he researched historical data and statistical information on the United States Senate and House of Representatives under Dr. Sean Theriault, a government professor at UT. His contributions are noted in Theriault's 2013 book, The Gingrich Senators: The Roots of Partisan Warfare in Congress.[9]
Film criticism[edit]
Dabney began working full-time as a film critic while attending school at the University of Texas, writing for local print publications such as INsite Magazine and Study Breaks Magazine[10] as well as reviewing on television for outlets such as CNN.[11] and Fox News[12][13] He served as president of the Austin Film Critics Association for eight years, and the organization grew from 3 members to 25 during his tenure. The group was called "wildly contrarian" by Entertainment Weekly after the release of their 2006 awards.[14]
Work in the Austin film community[edit]
Dabney has appeared on multiple moderated Q&A film panels for the Austin Film Society's[15] and has lectured at prestigious institutions such as St. Edward's University.[16] He has served as a juror at the South by Southwest Film Festival multiple times,[17] and has also judged beauty contests in the Austin area.[18] In 2011, he presented an award at the SXSW Film Awards Ceremony,[19] and most recently served alongside fellow Austin director Emily Hagins as a juror at the 2013 SXSW Film Fest.[20][21]
In 2008, he founded a classic cinema program with Tim League of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to promote classic films to local area high school students.[22] At the 2010 Fantastic Fest Film Awards, he won the title of "Best Shakey Face".[23]

Dabney began directing music videos in 2010 and has worked with notable artists and bands such as We Came As Romans, Asking Alexandria, Emmure, Motionless in White, Chalie Boy, Miss May I, The Air I Breathe, Big Chocolate and For All Those Sleeping.
