Ajit Varma is an American computer programmer and entrepreneur. He was the creator of the Bitcoin projects at Square, Inc. where he led consumer products.[1][2][3] He is currently an executive at WhatsApp where he leads business products.[4]
Early life and education
Varma grew up in Texas.[5] He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering graduating in 2 years.[citation needed]
Career
Varma started his professional career at Google where he led search quality and ads quality efforts.[citation needed] He and a few other Google employees founded the artificial intelligence company Adku.[6][not in citation given] Varma was the CEO of Adku until January 2012, when the company's technology was acquired by Groupon.[7]
In April 2012, Varma joined Square as an executive leading Square's consumer products.[8][not in citation given] In late December 2016, Varma announced his plans to return to Google to lead Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Groups and Google+.[9] In February 2019, Varma joined WhatsApp to lead business products.[10][not in citation given]
On August 26, 2020, Varma announced his candidacy for the Palo Alto city council running on a platform for liberalization of the city's business policies.[11][not in citation given]
