Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters (also known as Commonwealth Joe) is an American specialty coffee roaster and retailer based in Arlington, Virginia United States. Part of the third wave of coffee movement, Commonwealth Joe is known for introducing Nitro cold brew coffee in the D.C. Metro area; later expanding their business operations to other U.S. regions, including Philadelphia, New York, Boston and California. The company also distributes its products online throughout the United States.
History[edit]
Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters had its informal roots in Culpeper, Virginia, where Robert and his mother, Julia Peck, worked together at Cameron Street Coffee House.[1] When Robert left for college, his mother continued to work at the coffee house and began a hobby that would become the cornerstone of Commonwealth Joe: coffee roasting.[1] Julia started roasting coffee for family and friends from the Peck home in Culpeper, Virginia; her son Robert then started to help his mother sell her roasted coffee online.[2]
In 2012, Robert Peck, Sean Douglass, Eric Mo, and Carl Barth formally began Commonwealth Joe as a business venture, opening the coffee roasting company and launching their coffee products in and around Arlington, Virginia.[3] Robert partnered with Chase Damiano; both used to work together as consultants at the same firm, and Chase was also Commonwealth Joe's first customer.[2] In 2014, they acquired Java Shack, which had opened 19 years earlier[4], as the company's first community coffee shop.[3] Without changing the shop's name; Peck and Damiano took over Java Shack's operations starting Jan. 1, 2015, learning the basics of running a coffee shop.[2]
The company opened their first Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters branded shop in Pentagon City in 2016.[3] They marketed the brand by promoting Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roaster's flagship nitro cold brew coffee served on tap[5] and operating a fleet of nitro cold brew delivery trikes.[6] That first shop was built with the help of local architecture firm Core, and is located inside The Bartlett building in Pentagon City.[7]
Commonwealth Joe expanded company operations in 2017 with the help of funding from Mendacre LLC, a Charlotte, North Carolina firm, and investments from Stroud Cos. and Hammerstone Capital.[8] Funding was raised primarily to grow Commonwealth Joe's cold brew coffee business, financing the purchase of brewing equipment for its cold brewing facility in Beltsville, Maryland as well as roasting equipment and recruitment of sales team members.[8] It was also in 2017 when Commonwealth Joe started offering a new product, Iced Cascara.[9] [10] The company also expanded its office coffee program from the DC Metro Area to New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In 2018, Commonwealth Joe started offering kombucha on tap offer more variety to customers.[6]
Starting February 2019, Commonwealth Joe partnered with Smart Beverage Technologies in a pioneering initiative to install Kegerator Vending Machines in offices in the area of Pentagon City,[11] [12] and expanding into D.C., New York, and Philadelphia [13]; partnering with interested business establishments.[14] Among Commonwealth Joe's first partners that installed the Kegerator Vending Machines in their establishments were: Monumental Markets (Beltsville, MD), South Block (Washington, DC), and Social Tables (Washington, DC) to offer employees, customers, tenants and members, their products.[15]
In October 2019, Commonwealth Joe announced that The Java Shack store will be closed after November 24, 2019, the end of the lease term on its retail space.[16][17]
Commonwealth Joe has been discussed and cited by the media outlets such as: DC Inno,[18] Washington City Paper,[19][20] Forbes 30 Under 30,[21] and the Sun Gazette.[22]
Business Model and Locations[edit]
Regionally, Commonwealth Joe operates as a bricks and mortar business in Washington D.C., and provides coffee as a service on premises including offices, residential apartment buildings, gyms, sports stadium, universities and other places in several U.S. states.[14] In addition, the company distributes their coffee products via online market channels and also collaborates with delivery service companies such as SpeedETab, DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. Commonwealth Joe operated a fleet of nitro cold brew delivery trikes across Arlington.[6] The company has also entered into agreement with various offices to install coffee vending machines and sell their cold brew products in the DC Metro area, New York Tri-State, Philadelphia, Boston, and California.[8]
Commonwealth Joe retained and expanded the production facility in Culpeper, Virginia, and invested in a cold brew brewing facility in Beltsville, Maryland in 2016 to to increase production capacity.[7][8] The company operated two coffee shops - The Java Shack, which the partners acquired and began operating on Jan. 1, 2015 and The Commonwealth Joe Coffeehouse which opened on October 22, 2016; both shops are in Arlington, VA. The Java Shack closed operations in late 2019.[16]
