ConDrain was founded in 1954 by brothers Alfredo De Gasperis, Angelo De Gasperis, and Antonio Degasperis, as a small concrete and drain company. Since its inception, ConDrain has expanded into the land development industry, and has produced many other related companies. Currently, ConDrain has four head office locations, and conducts business mainly within the Greater Toronto Area, the Golden Horseshoe, Western Ontario, the Ottawa Region as well as in other provinces and the United States.[2]

Companies in the ConDrain Group construct roads; supply recycled and virgin aggregate materials; produce concrete pipe, precast units and lighting poles; manufacture valves and fittings; install gas lines, power lines, fibre optic cables, and street lighting; build houses and commercial and industrial buildings; and develop large tracts of land for community living.[2] Other related companies have constructed high tech communication systems, developed vineyards, such as Vineland Estates in the Niagara Region, and built golf courses.[3]

History[edit]

Before 1960, Angelo and Alfredo De Gasperis operated their new company out of a small bungalow near Highway 401 in Toronto.

During the 1960s, ConDrain ran a large number of projects in the Niagara Region. Its first major project was to service a 100 lot subdivision in Grimsby on the shoreline of Lake Ontario in 1962. The company went on to install many water and sewer lines in subdivisions within Thorold, Welland, Niagara Falls and St Catharines.

In 1971, development of the community of Erin Mills commenced in the new City of Mississauga, to the west of Toronto.[4] Cadillac Developments Limited, the developer of the 7,000 acre land assembly, selected ConDrain to service their subdivisions.[4] In 1972, the De Gasperis brothers expanded into community and neighbourhood development by creating Metrus Developments Inc.,[5] and into commercial-industrial real estate by forming Metrus Properties Limited. Both companies were established and operating by the end of the decade.[6] ConDrain entered the road construction industry in 1981. Another company under ConDrain, Con-Elco Ltd., became a major player in the land servicing industry during the 1980s, specializing in the installation of underground power and telephone systems. In 1983, ConDrain Construction became ConDrain Company (1983) Ltd.

Through Metrus, the De Gasperis brothers began to develop significant planned communities north of Toronto, including Weston Downs in Vaughan and Bayview Hill in Richmond Hill.[7]

Crowle Fittings and Supply Ltd was acquired by the brothers in 1986 as natural extension to the core business at ConDrain, producing a line of products which includes cast iron saddles and fittings, valves and hydrants. Con Cast Pipe was created in 1989. Con-Elco[8] acquired Fellmore Electrical Contractors (1991) to produce roadway lighting and created a new division (2000) for gas line installation.[9] Futureway Communications Inc. (1998) was created as a data, telephone and video service provider. Con Cast Pipe[10] expanded its product base to box culverts, large valve chambers and precast concrete arch systems (con/spans) for bridge construction. A subsidiary, Sky Cast Inc., was created (1997) to manufacture concrete lighting poles.[11] Ontario Concrete Products (OCP) began operations (2002) as a precast concrete pipe manufacturing company using robotic technology. The product lines of Con Cast Pipe and OCP are totally integrated.

In 2000, it was decided that Jim and Romeo De Gasperis would be appointed to head the company, running it jointly as co-CEOs and President and Vice-President, respectively.[2] Strada Aggregates was formed in 1996.

Notable projects[edit]

1960's to present - Erin Mills is a planned community in Mississauga, Ontario, that has been under continuous development since the 1960s. Originally owned by Cadillac Fairview, it was purchased by the Erin Mills Development Corporation in 1983, of which ConDrain is part owner. Since its inception, ConDrain has been responsible for all of the grading, underground and infrastructure servicing, and road building within the project. Major components include the Glen Brook energy dissipator; Lake Wabukayne with its dam and boardwalk; storm water detention facilities and open channels; trunk and local sanitary sewers; trunk and local watermains; pedestrian overpasses and underpasses; parks; roads and parking lots; site services for the Credit Valley Hospital, Erin Mills Town Centre (owned 50/50 by the Erin Mills Development Corporation and Cadillac Fairview), and numerous neighbourhood shopping centres, industrial buildings, townhouse and apartment developments. The original Erin Mills land holding was 7,000 acres; approximately 5,500 of them have been serviced by ConDrain since 1969.

  • Collingwood - Alliston Watermain[13]

1999 - Collingwood - ConDrain and SNC - Lavalin Engineers and Constructors (SLE&C), together partner with the Town of New Tecumseth for the installation (design, maintain, operate, and partially finance) of a 57-km water transmission line from Collingwood to Alliston, Ontario. It services the water supply needs of the town and surrounding communities.

2010 - ConDrain was awarded Phase 2 of roads and infrastructure for the Humber River Regional Hospital, Ontario's first digital hospital. The contract covered roads, soil remediation and backfill on Block 2. Additionally, ConDrain was responsible for the water and sewer connections to the site, including the installation of a 15-ft diameter drainage pipe under Wilson Avenue.
