Conduit Magazine is an independent international journal of poetry, art, non-fiction, and interviews.

Conduit was founded in Western Massachusetts in 1993 by current executive editor, poet William D. Waltz. Its first two issues were assembled by hand in a Kinkos.[1][2] [3]

Conduit publishes contemporary work from emerging and established American and international writers. Its production incorporates graphic design from Randall Heath.[4] Attributes of the publication include its print format on narrow pages that measure 5 inches wide by 10.5 inches tall and pagination marked by words instead of numbers.[5][6][7][8]Conduit is produced without grant money or university affiliation.[9] In the Spring of 2020, Conduit released its thirtieth issue[10].

Conduit has published the poetry of Rae Armantrout, John Ashbery, Mary Jo Bang, David Berman, Terrance Hayes, Brenda Hillman, Eileen Myles, Alice Notley, Ron Padgett, Mary Ruefle, Tomaž Šalamun, Charles Simic, Cole Swensen, James Tate, Dara Wier, Matthew Zapruder, Wendy Xu, Dean Young, and others. Regularly contributing poets include Bob Hicok and Noelle Kocot[11].

Translation[edit]

Conduit has published translations of the work of Dante Alighieri, Guillaume Apollinaire, Charles Baudelaire, Roberto Bolaño, Josefine Klougart, Henri Michaux, and others.

Interviews[edit]

Conduit has published interviews with astronomers, ethno-botonists, historians, astrologers, and oceanic researchers.[12] Past interview subjects have been Terence McKenna,[3] Matt Taibbi, Krista Tippett, and others. In August 2012, a portion of Conduit’s interview with Buzz Aldrin was reprinted in Harper’s Magazine.[13]

Visual art[edit]

Conduit presents visual artwork and has featured the work of Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and Ai Weiwei, as well as artist Scott Dolan's illustrated series The Adventures of Kutch & Mancuso.[14]

Conduit Books & Ephemera[edit]

In 2018, Conduit announced a book-publishing extension, named Conduit Books & Ephemera. Two book prizes were introduced: the Marystina Santiestevan First Book Prize and the Minds on Fire Open Book Prize. The first two books from Conduit Books & Ephemera were published in March 2019.[15]

Recognitions[edit]

Poems from Conduit have been anthologized in The Best American Poetry[19] and The Pushcart Prize.[20]

In 2002, Print Magazine awarded Conduit a PRINT Regional Design Award, a certificate of "design excellence" for its 10th issue, The Play Thing.

In 2007, Conduit was named "Best Literary Journal" in City Pages' annual "Best of the Twin Cities" Awards[21]
