Soviet Station kadavu

“Soviet Station Kadavu” is a sharp political satire produced and staged in 2022 by Kanal Samskarika Vedhi, a Thiruvananthapuram-based theatre collective, in collaboration with the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. The play is a theatrical adaptation of the short story of the same name, written by Murali Krishnan and published by Green Books.

The script and direction were independently developed by Hazim Amaravila, who reimagined the narrative for the stage with bold artistic vision and political commentary.

At its core, Soviet Station Kadavu explores how the lust for power can erode the very foundations of democracy. It argues that once individuals taste the intoxicating pleasure of power, they rarely relinquish it—even within democratic systems. History, the play suggests, offers few exceptions to this rule. Plots

Set in the 1980s, Soviet Station Kadavu begins with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev experimenting with the concept of time travel. His aim: to reshape history and preserve the USSR’s dominance as the world’s supreme economic and military power. To explore alternate futures, he brings the legendary inventor Nikola Tesla from the 1940s to the Soviet era. After intense calculations and deliberations, they arrive at a bold solution—assassinate Adolf Hitler before World War II, thereby preventing the war and altering the global balance of power in favor of the USSR.

To carry out this mission, they recruit an unlikely assassin: Cheerani Ravi, a young, apolitical man from present-day Kerala who is preparing for his PSC exams. Known for his satirical observations on India’s current political landscape, Ravi lives near the Thumba ISRO facility, where exposure to magnetic fields has made him uniquely capable of withstanding time travel.

With Brezhnev’s guidance, Ravi is sent back in time to Nazi Germany. But history takes a dark and ironic turn. Seduced by the allure of power—and by Eva Braun, Hitler’s wife—Ravi abandons his mission. Instead of eliminating the dictator, he assumes his place and rises to become an even more brutal and authoritarian figure than Hitler himself.

As the play nears its conclusion, Ravi’s journey reflects a timeless truth: dictators, no matter how powerful, are inevitably consumed by the very forces they unleash. Soviet Station Kadavu ends not just as a critique of power, but as a satirical reminder of how history has a way of repeating itself—often in stranger and more dangerous forms.
