Conversation (Gossip, or Words, words) (Tahitian - Les Parau parau; French - Conversation, ou les Potin, ou les Paroles, paroles) is an oil on canvas painting by Paul Gauguin now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.[1]

It was produced in 1891 during his first year on Tahiti. Gauguin himself entitled the work Les Parau Parau (meaning Words, Words or Conversation) and attached great importance to that title, writing to his wife Mette-Sophie about it regarding an upcoming exhibition in Denmark on 8 December 1892:

In the catalogue I want the titles to appear as they appear on the paintings: that language is very strange and has several meanings ... 1) Parau Parau ([meaning] Words, Words).[2]

Gauguin gave the work to his friend George Chaudet in Paris for safekeeping.[1] After Chaudet's death it came into art dealer Ambroise Vollard's possession around 1899 then Paul Durand-Ruel's in November 1903.[1] It was for a time in a private collection before returning to Vollard, who sold it and another Gauguin work to Ivan Morozov for a total of 15,000 francs.[1] It was seized by the Soviet state on the October Revolution and assigned to the Museum of Modern Western Painting in Moscow, then the State Museum of Modern Western Art in 1923 and finally its present home in 1948.[1]
