Cosmin Baiu (August 1, 1977) is a Romanian writer known for his existentialist and thriller novels, as well as for a management and financial analysis series which became best-sellers in Romania.
Early life
Cosmin Baiu was born in 1977 in Bucharest but was raised in a small town until the age of 17. During his childhood he became famous among his friends as an avid reader. He used to read his favorite books several times and enjoyed telling them and creating new stories. He was influenced by the works of Mark Twain, Jules Verne, Alexandre Dumas, Karl May and later by science fiction writers such as Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and horror writers such as Stephen King.
Career
Cosmin started writing short stories early, mostly for himself, and later poetry, but was permanently discouraged by everyone, as seeking fortune and wealth was considered the main focus for a young man in a poor country like Romania was in the ‘90s.
He graduated from the University of Economics in 2000, began his PhD, and started a career working for several multinational banks. With the local subsidiary of Société Générale, he was appointed to top executive positions until 2018.[1]
Published Works
He published his first book “Financial Analysis for Everyone”[2] in 2018, a detailed guide for entrepreneurs and bank financial analysts, comprising more than 50 real case examples resulting from personal experience. The book quickly became a national success and was followed the next year by “Financial Analysis for Everyone 2”, which focused more on two topics: bank fraud attempts and the management of sales and back-office teams.[3]
During 2018 Cosmin BAIU wrote a children’s novel entitled “The Adventures of Fram at the North Pole” which tells the story of a young Samoyed dog named Fram travelling half of the world to save his friends who were kidnapped by a dark wizard and taken to the North Pole. The novel is thought of as part of a 3-book series. All the illustrations of the book are hand drawn by the author himself.
In 2019 Cosmin BAIU published the dark, existentialist novel “The Interview”, inspired initially by the music of the black metal Romanian band, Negura Bunget. The novel tells the story of a student, named Mr. C, who wakes up in an unknown room, in an unknown city, with a single thought in mind: he must hurry to a job interview, somewhere downtown. He soon discovers that he lost his memory and does not know anything about his past, outside his name, so he must learn who he is together with his interviewers. The novel’s quite unique style has received warm reviews from readers and was often compared with Kafka’s “The Trial” and Mircea Eliade’s “With the Gypsy Girls”.
Cosmin Baiu initiated an eBook series entitled “Midnight Hours” under which he published several short stories such as Monster (2019), inspired by a contemporaneous Romanian serial killer, Pandemic (2020), The World of Cockroaches (2019), Traveler in the night (2019)
During 2019 he started to write the novel “Last Night in Auschwitz”, which initially he intended to be a short story. The main objective of the book was to describe as realistically as possible the day-to-day life and death in one of the most famous Nazi camps. For this book Cosmin documented for several months, trying to assimilate the psychology of war criminals such as Josef Mengele, Rudolf Hoss and Karl Fritzsch and imagine the daily routine inside the camp, based on inmate journals which survived the war. The second objective was to literary explore the answer to a “what if?” question: what if a man who encompasses all the characteristics of Nietzsche’s “super-man” is made prisoner and thrown inside the camp, along with the others? Is he going to give up hope and starve to death or is he going to rally the inmates and try to evade? The novel tells the story of an ancient history professor from Vienna, separated from his wife and kids, who is transported by railway to Auschwitz. He refuses to accept compromise, to obey orders in exchange for food, to betray his inmates for a supplementary bowl of soup and very soon this behavior is observed both by the prisoners and also by the Lager Fuhrer, Herr Rudolf Hoss. The book was published beginning of 2020 and is going to be translated into English.
