Anoosha Syed is a Pakistani-Canadian illustrator and concept artist for animation.[1][2] She has performed illustration and animation work for Disney,[3] DreamWorks TV, PBS, Netflix, Sprout,[2] and illustration for publishers such as Simon & Schuster,[4] Henry Holt & Co.,[5] Random House,[6] BOOM! Studios,[7] Macmillan Press,[7] Harper Collins, and Cottage Door Press.[8] Other freelance work has included postcards and merchandise for Owl Crate,[9][10] the Google doodle on Pakistani actor Waheed Murad,[10] and illustrations for the children's magazine Storytime.[10] She has tabled at New York Comic Con and Pasadena's Lightbox Expo, the latter at which she spoke on a panel about illustration for children's books.[11] In 2016, Syed's depictions of Disney princesses as everyday millennial-aged people garnered notice from outlets such as Bustle Media Group's Elite Daily.[12] In 2019, Syed illustrated the children's book I Am Perfectly Designed, written by Karamo Brown of Queer Eye;[1][13] Brown has stated that he and his co-author, his son, directly selected Syed as their illustrator for the project.[14] Also in 2019, Syed conducted the workshop "Character Design" at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and North York Arts' UPTOWN KIDLIT.[15]
Early life[edit]
Syed was born in Pakistan. As she was growing up, her family moved around to different countries such as Switzerland, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Toronto.[2]
Education[edit]
As a child, Syed wanted to be a writer.[7] This segued into her desire to pursue art.[7] She attended Ceruleum Ecole d’arts Visuels in Lausanne, Switzerland, graduating with her BFA in Illustration in 2015.[2][16]
Controversy[edit]
In 2017, Syed received racist attacks over her depiction of a multiracial Harry Potter cast.[17] The Huffington Post as well as the BBC covered the backlash.[18][19] As the book characters' skin tone was never stated in author J.K. Rowling's manuscripts, others have cast the characters as a variety of races, including the London West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.[20]
