Cottonwood Technology Fund is a Dutch-American venture capital firm. The firm has offices in Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States, and Enschede, the Netherlands.[1] It makes impact investments in deep tech, hardware and high tech. Cottonwood manages multiple investment funds, including funds specific to Northwest Europe.[2]

Cottonwood Technology Fund was founded by David Blivin in 2010 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[3] Blivin is the former Managing Director of Southeast Interactive Technology Funds, totaling US$175 million with an average investment multiple of 3.7x on managed investments.[4][5]

In 2014, Cottonwood expanded its operations to Europe.[6] Its European headquarters is located on the innovation campus of the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands. It is led by Alain le Loux, former Member of the Executive Committee of Getronics PinkRoccade and CEO of multiple startups.[7] Before joining Cottonwood, Alain le Loux was an angel investor in 17 companies, including SciSports and LipoCoat.[8][9] In 2019, Cottonwood hired Forbes 30 under 30 honoree Marie Weijler to join its investment team.[10][11] In 2021, Venture Capital Journal included Marie Weijler in its annual ranking of 40 Rising Stars Under 40.[12]

In November 2020, Cottonwood announced its initial close of Cottonwood Technology Fund III.[13] Cornerstone investors in the fund include Merrion Oil & Gas and Caterpillar Ventures.[14][15]

Investments[edit]

Cottonwood Technology Fund specializes in seed stage and early stage investments in private companies.[16]

Its portfolio is mainly in photonics, electronics, advanced materials, nanotechnology, medical technology, advanced manufacturing, robotics, clean technology and the renewable energy transition.[17]

Cottonwood has invested in over 20 companies since 2010, including Skorpios Technologies, BayoTech, Sarcos Robotics, Infinitum Electric, SoundEnergy, OPNT and Eurekite.[18]

In 2019, their portfolio company Exagen Inc. exited in an initial public offering (Nasdaq: XGN).[19][20] As of September 2019, the value of Exagen Inc. was US$305 million, a growth of 2,300% in 8.5 years.[21]

Recognition[edit]

The internal rate of return (IRR) of Cottonwood Technology Fund I is 46%.[22] In an independent study released on February 23, 2018, PitchBook Data recognized Cottonwood as a Top 3 U.S. venture capital fund with business-to-business investments based on the internal rate of return, cash multiples and cash flows.[23]

In 2019, Cottonwood was awarded the Investment Fund Award for Best High-Tech Venture Capital Fund of the Year.[24]

Cottonwood is featured as one of the Most Consistent Top Performing Venture Capital Fund Managers in the Preqin Global Private Equity & Venture Capital Report 2020.[25]
