Creambell is an Indian ice cream brand headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, India.[2] It was launched in 2003 by RJ Corp[1], a diversified conglomerate with interests in beverages, dairy, and quick-service restaurants.
Creambell operates across 19 states in India and produces a range of ice creams, frozen desserts, and dairy products.[6] The company has also expanded to select international markets, including Nepal, Bhutan, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Zambia.[7] In addition to ice cream, Creambell has diversified into the dairy segment with products such as packaged milk and value-added dairy items.[8]
History
Origins (2003)
Creambell was launched in 2003 in India by RJ Corp, through its subsidiary Devyani Food Industries Ltd., in technical collaboration with the French dairy company Candia.[9] The venture originally operated under the name Universal Dairy Products, as a 50:50 partnership between Ravi Jaipuria and CK Jaipuria.[10] The brand entered the Indian ice cream market with the goal of offering world-class quality products, introducing both international flavors and Indian-inspired varieties.[11]
Consolidation and Early Expansion (2008–2013)
In 2008, RJ Corp acquired CK Jaipuria’s stake in Universal Dairy Products, gaining complete control over the Creambell business.[12] Following the acquisition, the company invested heavily in expanding its manufacturing capacity, notably setting up a greenfield plant in Goa to complement the existing facility in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh.[13] This strategic expansion allowed Creambell to strengthen its supply chain and widen its distribution network across the country. Between 2008 and 2013, the company’s operations grew sixfold, establishing it as one of the fastest-growing ice cream brands in India.[14]
International Expansion
While Creambell’s core operations remain in India, the brand has also extended its reach to international markets. Its products are now available in several countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Zambia.[15]
Finance
Creambell, in the fiscal year 2014–15, the company was on track to close with sales of around ₹500 crore, reflecting steady growth in the intervening years.[16] CARE Ratings has reaffirmed the stable outlook for the company, citing strong brand recognition, an extensive distribution network, and recent topline growth driven by premium product launches and capacity expansion.[17] The company is also setting up a new manufacturing facility in Jammu, expected to be operational by April 2024.[17]
Growth and Market Presence
Over the years, Creambell expanded its portfolio to include more than 130 flavors, catering to diverse consumer preferences. Its products range from classic ice creams to innovative offerings inspired by regional tastes.[1] The brand has established four major manufacturing plants located in Baddi, Goa, Kosi (near Agra), and Asansol, with a retail network spanning over 35,000 outlets across 19 Indian states.[7] Creambell currently holds an estimated 15% share of the Indian ice cream market.[18]
Recognition and Awards
Creambell’s rapid growth and quality focus have earned it several industry accolades. In 2013–14, it was recognized as “India’s Most Promising Brand” at the WCRC Leaders’ Asia Summit in London.[19] That same year, it achieved remarkable success at the Great Indian Ice Cream Contest organized by the Indian Dairy Association and DANISCO, winning four gold medals, two silver medals, and three best-in-class awards.[20] In 2015, the company was honored with the Make in India Award for Excellence in the Food & Beverage category, acknowledging its contribution to domestic manufacturing.[21]
