Cristhian Andrews (born May 28, 1990) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, composer, orchestrator, film editor, saxophonist and humanitarian. He specialises in dramatisations of real-life events and is known for his signature use of hand-held cameras.
He was the producer, composer and orchestrator to Travolta Cooper's film The Black Moses.[1][2] The film premiered at March du Film and International Village Market in Cannes Film Festival in May 2014. It examines the Moses mythology as it was manifested through the life and times of the first prime minister The Bahamas. It follows Lynden Pindling as he sets on a course to bring about social, political, and economic revolution to the British Bahama Islands. It stars Dennis Haysbert,[3] civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Sir Sidney Poitier, former South African President Thabo Mbeki (for Nelson Mandela), former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson, musician Wyclef Jean, and other international cast. It closed the Bahamas International Film Festival [4] as Tom Hooper's The King's Speech did in 2010.[5] As a result, The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Michael Jackson Foundation premiered the film. The Black Moses acquired distribution in Cannes Film Festival.
Andrews also recently wrote, directed, edited and scored Before We Lose. The film had its world premiere in Derry, Northern Ireland at the 2014 Academy Qualifying Foyle Film Festival.[6] The film competed for a Light in Motion best film award against Oscar-Nominated and Bafta Winning film Boogaloo and Graham.[7] The film is inspired by the article Chernobyl Health Effects in Turkey by Nilay Kar.[8]
He co-produced, composed and orchestrated Habeeb Lawal's The Veil of Silence. The film highlights the new law that prohibits same-sex marriage in Nigeria. The bill was signed in early January and states that those who support gay rights or fail to report someone they know to be gay will be imprisoned. It premiered at BFI Flare London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival,[9][10][11][12] Amnesty International film festival in Toronto, the Foreign Ministry of Germany, Minister for Foreign Affairs (Germany), Leeds Queer Film Festival in Leeds, United Kingdom, Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto, Melbourne Queer Film Festival in Australia and at the Unitarian Universalist United Nations office in New York City.[13]
Andrews worked on Julianne Michelle's film Awakened.[14] It stars Academy Award Nominee Sally Kirkland, Steven Bauer, Edward Furlong, John Savage and Stelio Savante.[15] The film premiered at the New York City Independent Film Festival and in Los Angeles at LA Femme Film Festival.
Since founding Audacity Innovative, an American motion picture company that addresses pressing social issues that ignite social change,[16] he has worked with Bollywood director Tushar tyagi [17] on a film entitled Gulabee. It touches upon the self-power it takes for young girls in brothels in India to escape their current state of life. Andrews served editing, scoring & orchestration, sound design and coloring duties on the film. Gulabee received the Royal Reel Award from Canada International Film Festival[18] and premiered at the New York Indian Film Festival in May 2014.[19]
Early career[edit]
Andrews graduated from New World School of the Arts in 2009. He performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama on June 15, 2009 as part of the White House Music Series that featured students from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz alongside trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera.[20][21]
A film entitled The Fling was executive produced by Bob Giraldi, the music video director of Michael Jackson's 'Beat it', in which Andrews provided editing, scoring and orchestrations for the film. The film premiered at the Directors Guild of America Theatre.[22][23]
Andrews worked on Michael Stern's E.A Poe's Berenice, which premiered at the Stony Brook Film Festival and at the Long Island International Film Expo.[24] It won 'Best Drama' at the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival and Best Thriller at the Los Angeles ITVFest (Independent Television Festival).[25]
A series by director Elin Grönblom entitled My Secret Friend featured on Backstage Magazine, was scored & orchestrated by Andrews.[26]
Film directing[edit]
Andrews recently directed Before We Lose. The film premiered in Derry, Northern Ireland at 2014 Academy Qualifying Foyle Film Festival.[27] The film tells the story of a mother and her 3-year-old son and the turn their lives take with her deteriorating health condition. Based on recent findings in the Black Sea Region of Turkey and inspired by the article Chernobyl Health Effects in Turkey by Nilay Kar.[28]
Theater[edit]
Aside from film, Andrews has directed numerous Off-Broadway plays such as Destination: Perseverance, The Trainer, PVT Wars by James McLure and others .[29][30]
DanSpiek Dance Theatre recently commissioned Andrews to write an original score for their upcoming film Fractures.[31]
Upcoming films[edit]
Andrews is attached to direct Najmia.[32] The film is inspired by the true story of Fawziya Abdullah Youssef, a pregnant 12-year-old Yemeni child bride who died after severe complications during childbirth in 2009.[33][34][35] The film stars Nadya Alabsi and The Hurt Locker's own Suhail Dabbach.[36]
Andrews is also currently in pre-production for Wake. A film produced by Supernova Media starring Mira Sorvino, Kathy Baker, and Julianne Michelle.
Humanitarian work[edit]
He continues to collaborate with Steven Spielberg's Children at Heart foundation, Chabad's Children of Chernobyl, that evacuates children from the radioactive Chernobyl region and provides them with critical medical care, new homes, and education.[37][38] Andrews participates in St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which treats and prevents devastating pediatric diseases as well as The Alzheimer's Association.[39][40]
