Cuming Street
Cuming Street is a main street and one of the most southern streets in North Omaha, Nebraska.[1][2] It is designated as Nebraska Highway 64 for much of its length. Originally a westbound street creating a two-street parallel with Burt Street, it opened as a street with an eastbound and a westbound lane.
History
Originally a branch of the Military Road, it was originally called Badger Street before being renamed Cuming Street in honor of Thomas B. Cuming.[3] It was laid out as a path in 1854, the same year that Omaha became a city and 13 years before Nebraska became a state.
Becoming a mix of a residential and a business district, it originally became an Irish neighborhood and then turned into an Italian one. In 1905, Cuming Street and Mercer Street joined, pushing Cuming Street west of North 30th Street and towards Military Avenue. There, it went to modern-day limits.
In 1927–28, Cuming Street, along with part of Military Avenue, the Northwest Radial Highway, and Maple Street were all designated as part of Nebraska Highway 64. The highway remains today.[4]
Cuming Street is known for its many ethnic groups. It is often known as the southern border of the Omaha neighborhood of Near North Side, in which many African Americans reside. Other neighborhoods situated along Cuming Street are Gifford Park, Bemis Park, Walnut Hill, Gold Coast, Dundee, and Creighton University.[5]
Route
Cuming Street begins at an intersection with North 56th Street in the Dundee neighborhood. It heads east for around a half mile before intersecting North 50th Street, turning it slightly north before continuing east.
Another half mile later, Cuming Street opens into a three-way intersection with the Northwest Radial Highway and Saddle Creek Road. Both roadways terminate at Cuming Street and Nebraska Highway 64 turns onto Cuming Street, designating Cuming Street as the highway.
Cuming Street goes east, going through several historic neighborhoods and overpassing North 33rd Street. At an intersection with the North Freeway (US-75), Nebraska Highway 64 terminates, but Cuming Street roadway does not terminate and keeps eastward.
It exits the underpass from the highway and goes east into Creighton University. It exits Creighton at North 17th Street and enters North Downtown (NoDo) in Omaha. It goes on a main street of NoDo until its eastern terminus at North 10th Street. The roadway continues as Abbott Drive (Iowa Highway-165).
